It’s Time for All of America To Celebrate Juneteenth
Daily Beast ^ | June 19, 2020 | Barrett Holmes Pitner

For far too long Juneteenth, marking the official end of slavery in America, has remained a niche holiday within the Black community. Now it must turn into a national holiday that all Americans should embrace.

Following George Floyd’s murder, Americans have stood up and declared that they can no longer tolerate the American status quo that devalues Black lives. Americans of all walks of life have supported defunding the police, and forcefully removed statues and monuments celebrating Confederates, slave owners and colonizers who terrorized indigenous people. Americans have occupied the streets chanting Black Lives Matter and shouting down white supremacy.

Juneteenth is a minor celebration in our nation’s history. If you’re going to celebrate that day then there are thousands more just like it.

Fact is, blacks don’t celebrate Juneteenth by acting free.

I see this as a great way to celebrate a REPUBLICAN President who emancipated the slaves held by Democrats.

Put it in that light and you will see it fade from the MSM memory very fast.

Just found out this morning our workplace is celebrating it for the first time. Was sent home as we’re not allowed to work our day off and everyone else has 1/2 day. I’d be ok with it except we needed the extra hours!

I’m super pissed that Juneteenth automatically appeared on my Android phone calendar. I can’t get rid of it.

Frankly I would trade MLK Day for Juneteenth. We should celebrate the end of slavery, rather than a Man.

Progressives are insane. They want to celebrate something that did NOTNING! The Emancipation Proclamation freed NO ONE! It only applied to states that were in open rebellion, and over which Lincoln had no authority; and at that it excluded sections of those states that were under Union control (such as some Louisiana parishes). It did not apply to slave states that had not seceded (for instance, Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky). So, the EC did nothing as far as emancipation, as Lincoln knew it wouldn’t; but, he hoped that the EC would incentivize slaves to revolt and thus create a headache for the Confederacy. Slavery was not abolished until the ratification of the 13th Amendment, AFTER the Civil War.

“Back in the 70’s in Texas, white folks celebrated Juneteenth by having to work extra hours to cover for the people who skipped work that day.”

Shoot, this “white folk” has done that for decades and it had nothing to do with some phony racist holiday. Whatever reason black co-workers pulled out of their asses to shirk showing up, we were there to take care of business. And it even included when Frances was busy filing her nails and couldn’t quite make it to the counter to help customers.

but, he hoped that the EC would incentivize slaves to revolt and thus create a headache for the Confederacy.

Another major incentive was to keep Britain and France from recognizing and supporting the Confederacy. Making emancipation an explicit war aim was meant to move public opinion in those countries to support the Union.

That’s true. When Lincoln ordered federal troops to invade the nascent Confederacy in 1861 the emancipation of the slaves wasn’t even on his radar, and certainly was not a reason for the start of the War (and Lincoln said as much). Lincoln said his reason for going to war was to restore the Union.

Why would you be open to this? The whole point is to further divide Americans.

Let’s create a holiday for the ending of slavery. Okay, good idea. What shall we call it?

How about we name it after the actual date that it ended? good idea, what date was it?

I think it was June thirteenth. No, it was June sixteenth. No, it was June nineteenth.

Hmm, I KNOW! Let’s call it Juneteenth! YES! Problem solved! /s

I’m sorry, I just can’t celebrate a holiday called “Juneteenth”,

Slavery Abolition Day. I’m okay with that. OOPS! Can’t use that one (SAD).

How about The End of Slavery Day? TEOSD. There! I’ll celebrate THAT! Wholeheartedly.

“For far too long Juneteenth, marking the official end of slavery in America,...”

So, the whole thing starts out with a lie. “Juneteenth” marks the moment when slaves in Galveston, Texas learned they were free under the Emancipation Proclamation issued on January 1, 1863. I imagine there were some slaves away from the coast who got the news even later. Slavery “officially” ended with the ratification of the 15th Amendment On December 6, 1865.

But we’re living in a time where some people’s ‘truths’ outweigh the facts.

I am against a National Holiday for Juneteenth. It reflects a bad light to out nation. The slaves were freed with Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. That’s is something to rejoice about! Let THAT be a National Holiday. F this Juneteenth Liberal PsyOp BS!!!!

The Emancipation Proclamation was made effective on January 1 so we get that day off anyway.
