Juneteenth, the annual commemoration of emancipation that has been celebrated in the African American community since June 19, 1865, should be a national federal holiday. On that day, in Galveston, Texas, a military officer informed African Americans that they had secured their freedom, more than two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation declaring "all persons held as slaves" in the rebelling Confederate states to be free.

Blacks should celebrate the whites who fought for their freedom.

There are a few million of them.

I’m ok with that as long as we’re actually insisting that the day was due to the Republican President Lincoln executive action of the Constitution during the Civil War.

History is so forgotten by the current generation that they don’t remember the war that led to the end of slavery and the freedom mechanisms that the Constitution ensured.

Rearrange a couple of letters in his name, and you get ‘penile’.

Only if it’s renamed “Emancipation Day.” If we’re going to make a Holiday of this thing, then for Heaven’s sake, define the object properly.

What a load of garbage. If they want to do THAT, why not declare the day of the Emancipation Proclamation a holiday and not the day some guy in Texas first learned of it?

“ We have it here in Texas.”
**********
The Civil War ended April 9th, 1865 when Lee surrendered at Appomattox. However, Word that the war was over didn’t reach Texas till June 19th, 1865 when US Gen Gordon read federal orders in Galveston stating all slaves were hereby free. Slaver was officially abolished on December 8th, 1865 with the ratification of the 13th Ammendment.

Great point. But we really don’t need more holidays. We need to teach history

The Emancipation Proclamation applied to only areas that were in rebellion. I’m not sure about June 19, but Kirby Smith surrendered May 26 or June 2, 1865.

Maybe there was some other confederate force that surrendered as late as June 19, but whenever it was it would have rendered the EP moot.

It required the 13th Amendment after that to end slavery.
(ratified Dec 6 1865).

The Republican Party was founded to end slavery. This holiday should be turned into a GOP celebration.
