SEATTLE - Black Lives Matter protesters negotiated with local officials here Friday over their terms for leaving a six block area that they have controlled for most of the week without a police presence.

“If there is no police, there is no problem,” Fekadu Shibeshi, an immigrant from Ethiopia, said as he surveyed the festive scene.
Organizers say thousands of people are living in the Autonomous Zone, though many spend only some time there before returning to their homes.

“It’s a temporary occupation until we get our demands met,” said Jessica Kilpatrick, a BLM spokeswoman.

An argument broke out within the autonomous zone Friday when Bridgette Allen and two other African-Americans began removing orange road barriers they said reminded them of slavery.
“We don’t want barriers, that’s the thing we’re trying to take down,” said Ms. Allen, 60.

They’ve been having problems every day. Whaa, send us food, the homeless ate all of ours. Whaa, we can’t put out a barrel fire. Whaa, our garden didn’t grow enough over night to feed the world. Whaa, we have to leave this Utopia every night to sleep on our purple mattress at home under the a/c where there’s no bugs crawling on us. Whaa, whaa, whaa.
