George Romney was a supporter of Saul Alinsky. He ran for president as an independent, then became a Republican to take down the western wing of the Republican party.

The Republican party was two parties. The west coast Republicans were guys like Goldwater and Reagan. The east coast Republicans were guys like Rockefeller and Bush.

Unfortunately, Reagan allowed the amnesty, which killed the west coast Republicans.
