I do own a gun, but it doesnt get much use, and I am not up to speed on what the law allows. Heres my question: Am I right to conclude that the right to shoot someone attacking you or your property depends on the state in which you live? For example, I have heard that in North Carolina, where I have friends who carry, an intruder must be inside the door of your home for you to have the right to shoot him; if he is taking an ax to your front door but hes not inside your home, You do not have the right to shoot him. In Florida, however, there is a stand your ground law extending your right to shoot someone outside your home. What I am thinking about here, is the people who arm themselves in order to defend their local businesses from rioters and looters. If someone is throwing bricks at your store front, can you shoot? Or does he have to come in through the door as a looter, first?
I recommend that anyone with a gun read this book:
If you have to shoot someone, first thing to do is shut up. Refuse to speak to anyone other than an attorney.
don’t just shoot, open the door shoot then drag his dead ass inside.
“Great advice. Also, better to be tried by twelve than carried by six....”
Likewise, no warning shots and no shooting for the leg. Center of mass or head (whichever is easier). A few extra shots to save you trouble of the person returning, but no cheap shots, like shots in the back - they’ll get you on that.
Also, if in a Blue domain, don’t brandish the weapon unless you plan to use it. And NEVER FORGET, you’re ‘not taking a life’, you’re simply ‘neutralizing a threat’, kind of like politely asking the bad-boy in high school to please stay away from your daughter.

memorize that.
it will keep you in good stead
and probably and probably keep you out of jail after that

Decent advice, and welcome to FR from a fellow CO FReeper.
“Or drag the body into your house in case he drops on your front porch!”
Think hard before doing that - police don’t like crime scenes that are re-arranged (unless they’re pro-Second Amendment).
Joe Biden told me to shoot him in the leg and I tried to do that, but somehow I hit him in the chest.
You better be sure and research this before you act.
Your local DA is your biggest threat to freedom.
Sorry shouldve posted to the guy with the question. I carry a gun and insurance and all the rest. Its a harsh dangerous world even in your home sometimes.
That's a great way to make SURE you get arrested.
Let me correct to say: "I was in fear for my life and I want a lawyer" then SHUT UP.
Probably not good advice for someone with a double stack pistol. 16 rounds would turn the guy into swiss cheese.
When Andy Jackson was a practicing lawyer he had a favorite saying. “The law tries to be Fair”.
In general that is true.
All good, no worries at all.
Here at the homestead, the first line of defense is three German Shepherds. Second line is me.
So far, all of our lives have been mercifully uneventful in that regard.
Remember this acronym: AIM
Access
Intent
Means
Does the person have access to you?
Does the person have the intent to harm you?
Does the person have the means to harm you?
You have about 50 nanoseconds to answer those questions.
The responses above that I was in fear for my life is the essence of the AIM acronym. If you draw your weapon and the perp is coming at you... with a knife.... and is saying he is going to kill you... I would say you have a very good reason for dropping the perp.
Do not say anything to the po po until you have a lawyer present!!!
Blood spatter evidence will out you on that.
Don’t do it.

Not sure if that is a good idea. Investigation can tell where you shot the person. Best thing is know your State and Local laws when you can shoot.
If you shoot someone first call is 911 to get an ambulance, second call is to get a lawyer. Don’t talk to police until you have a lawyer, this is very important.
With a jury, anything is possible. Look at OJ. Killed not one, but two people and got away with it.
Very state specific. Don’t do anything until you KNOW YOUR LAWS!!
And in the absence remember it is better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.
