In this case, I don’t think the UD definition applies. IMO It’s carrier pilot lingo to say they are landing.

Why do so many of you insist on commenting on something you really don’t understand? The pilot calls the ball when he acquires it, about 135 degrees thru his turn to final. It’s the first time the angles of the fresnel lens allow him to see it. It’s important to the LSO to know that he has acquired the ball, he says something like “231, ball”. The LSO acknowledges the transmission by replying, “Roger ball.”

Why are we - me included - clogging up a Q thread with esoteric naval aviation communications? And if we persist, at least get it right, for C’s sake.
