He would certainly take some, but the problem for him, is that he would lose a whole pile from the left. After all the media did to destroy Mittens, it would be hard to flip to supporting him. Not saying they won’t try, but there would be a lot of good ads to be made calling them out.

Never confuse strategy with a desire to “win” at all costs.
You attribute a political conscience to the media that is not there.
The media would rub their hands with joy because the Mittens candidacy would “stick it to the man”.
They would be all in trying to hoist Republicans on their own petard.
