Thermal scans part of GOP convention safety plan, but not masks
Dr. Mandy Cohen, secretary of the state Department of Health and Human Services, asked convention president Marcia Kelly to draft a health safety plan that included various scenarios that could work as the pandemic evolves over the next three months.
On Thursday, Kelly and RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel responded with eight proposed safety protocols:
Pre-travel health surveys for attendees
Daily health care questionnaires delivered via app
Thermal scans of all mandatory attendees before they board sanitized, pre-arranged transportation to the Spectrum Center
All buses used for the event will use the Charlotte Convention Center as a hub for a final health screening
All attendees must pass a health check before going through a dedicated “chute” and proceeding to normal Secret Service security checks
Anti-bacterial gel that is widely available in the arena
Aggressive sanitizing of all public areas
Media suites and hospitality areas subject to food service guidelines like restaurants
Masks and social distancing guidelines aren’t mentioned in the two-page letter Kelly and McDaniel sent to Cooper. Trump has refused to wear a mask in public, saying it sends the wrong message.
“The people who will visit the Charlotte region during the convention, as well as the businesses and workers who will benefit, are looking to you to set the rules and requirements for the RNC to hold a safe, secure event,” the women wrote in the letter. “We still do not have solid guidelines from the state and cannot in good faith ask thousands of visitors to begin paying deposits and making travel plans without knowing the full commitment of the governor, elected officials and other stakeholders in supporting the convention.”
