I have to go back over my notes to find some other anomalies. Such as he did contact the tower or not. No one responded when they should have when he did not land. I have some notes from a Civil Air Patrol guy I need to find.
He had to contact tower as it was open when he left. He didn't ask for VFR-flight following so no one would have been looking for him as there would be no handover. Again, not odd, I never did it.
As for no one looking when he didn't show, VFR flight plans are normally closed on short final upon the request of the pilot. He wouldn't have been overdue for 30 mins, but much depends on the competency of the tower @ the destination. We had to 'file' VFR, but it was pro forma in the local area. It is a bigger deal under ICAO (International) rules
The tower at Martha’s Vineyard was contacted at 9:39 as reported by Coast Guard Petty Officer Todd Burgun. (The plane was in the water at 9:41.)
The other officials reported he ‘never contacted a tower’, and Burgun was ‘removed’ from this investigation. Oddly enough, the local news station was asked to cut this report from their broadcast, but they cut it in the wrong place. William Cooper was able to obtain the original tape of Burgun making the comments.

This is a long video, but has the most information I have found all in one place.
There is a lot about this plane crash that has raised many questions.
