Coronavirus: wearing a cloth face mask is less about science and more about solidarity

N95 mask has a filtration device able to stop 95% of 0.3 micrometre (0.0003 millimetre) particles. Even though the coronavirus is estimated to be about 0.07 to 0.09 micrometres, virus particles are normally carried in droplets somewhat bigger than this, making the 0.3 micrometre limit quite adequate for protecting the wearer when combined with other protective equipment. Contrast this with cloth fibres, of the type you might use for a homemade mask. The gap between most cloth fibres found in the home depends on weave thickness and can be 1,000 times bigger compared with the N95 mask – around 1 to 0.1 millimetres. Although additive effects (combining with physical distancing, frequent hand washing and avoiding crowded spaces) should be considered, the benefits are further complicated by factors such as material type, number of layers, fit, face shape, frequency of adjusting, facial hair and the effect of having a moist and increasingly dirty piece of cloth over your face.

So from the scientific perspective, the evidence does seem fairly clear: a well-designed mask combined with the right safety equipment and behaviour has a protective effect, but homemade cloth face masks are simply too variable to be relied on for protection of yourself or others.

As there is an availability problem, it makes sense that the public are not urged to compete with medical staff for limited supplies of the most effective masks. Promoting alternative face coverings helps to prevent this competition.

Signalling [sic] to others that you are taking this seriously and trying to respect their safety as well as your own is, therefore, an important statement of solidarity.

You’ve just scrambled Karen’s ‘brain’.

I like to breathe. I have allergies that cause sinus problems so I don’t wear a mask. I don’t hassle people who wear them and I don’t expect to be hassled for not wearing one.

If you have one on for too long it causes hypercapnea and there are doctors who believe they can be harmful to the wearer.

So wear or don’t wear but don’t virtue signal.

“What is going to destroy the economic recovery are the yahoos who have been brainwashed by this shit and refuse to wear masks.“

No, shutting everything down killed the economy. There was never any true danger outside that which fear and stoking fear causes.

I forget, did we shut down and force masks during sars1? Did we have a run on hospitals and millions of dead littering the streets?

Lastly, how many years did our natural immunity last from sars 1 before sars2 could take hold?

Nature has its way of keeping hummanity safe and we are trying to stop it. Flattening the curve prolongs the virus. I see no reason to let sars2 run longer than is necessary.

There has been no shortage of medical space, no dead littering the streets. It is time to open everything now. Starting with our schools.

It is not solidarity - it is CONTROL.

I wore my (black) mask to the Publix yesterday. I instantly felt so..so included, accepted, hailed as a good person who just wants to save lives. Friendly greetings, extra courtesy everywhere, it was all, all.....just a bunch of touchy feely kumbaya cr@p!!

This store is adjacent to a large university so I suppose I was taken as a fellow liberal (eww!). But it was fun looking at some college babe and mouthing exactly what I’d like to...well, never mind.

Solidarity, yeah, that’s what it felt like.

Masks are the equal opportunity hijab/burqa. Men as well as women can demonstrate their submission. Sad thing is back in my day those under 30 would have not complied. Now the they are the biggest supporters of establishment control.

More like trying to not attract attention while out and about. Trying to avoid getting shrieked at by some Karen.

Yup.

Closer but still not right.

It’s about habituation to taking demeaning orders.

I read the studies on pubmed every day - haven’t seen one like what you are referencing. Want to help a guy out with a source?

Actually the wearer is breathing back in all of those expelled particles

That paper claims that hand washing doesn’t help, that respiratory etiquette doesn’t help, that cleaning surfaces doesn’t help, and that masks don’t help.

You believe all that? Seems odd to me. I may spend some time reading the studies they base those claims on. I’ve read some of them over the past several weeks already.

The only reason I wear one. Avoiding confrontation is always more prudent. 20 years ago I would not have worn one and FU anybody who would Karen me.

I went to Safeway last night for food and beverages.

While flirting with the girls we temporarily pulled our masks down, as we were having a hard time breathing and wanted to see what each other looked like.

Felt like Christmas, Easter and my birthday all at once.

Beautiful women...

Exactly. I got into an argument with a leftist about that and how these homemade cloth masks really will not filter out the virus or keep you safe But was told “any little bit helps, and even if it doesn’t it shows that you care about me.”

That, habituation to taking demeaning orders, was already accomplished with pointless bi-annual clock changes in the name of “Daylight Savings”.

problem is most people do not have access to N95 and most people are NOT wearing them....

however, even the flimsy thing I use will protect against large droplets from someones cough or sneeze....I would then change masks and wash my hands....

its all about viral load...the less you receive the less sick you could possibly get....

my rant though is this.....do not come into a store with your hacking cough and sneezing at everybody....stay home....stay away from the rest of us....

I particularly hate that wet sounding smokers cough....please....just stay home or find an N95 and at least pretend you care about preventing the spread of your germs...
