I agree, mbrfl. I’ve weighed in on this before so forgive the repetition. Either President Trump has genuine animus towards Sessions, or it’s all an elaborate act that someone considers necessary for future optics. Whichever it is, this particular pas de deux is hard to watch.
If this is confusing for us, it must be worse for the people of Alabama who see a President they like tearing down one of their all-time favourite senators.
My very liberal niece in Alabama has decided to vote for Sessions to spite Trump. She says friends plan to do the same. Interesting. I find it sad that while Trump who I love bashes Sessions, he has never said one nasty thing about Trump.

Agreed. And I get so many responses saying it’s just theater. But the question is, why do something that is potentially so destructive to the Alabama Senate race just for theater? especially considering that Trump had already established his ‘feud’ with Sessions long before this Senate race and doesn’t need to continue it to try to establish Session’s independence from Trump. That’s already been established. This is overkill.
So it’s not necessary from that front and only serves to do damage to the Alabama Senate race - dividing the GOP as it does. So, if there’s a purpose to the current flame war between the two, it’s something other than establishing the narrative of Sessions independence. That’s already been established. And the purpose must be important enough to justify the apparent risk it places on the Alabama Senate race. I haven’t heard any convincing explanations of what that purpose might be.
The only possible theory I’ve come up with regarding the current Trump/Sessions feud - and it’s an incomplete theory - is that the plan is to actually have Sessions win the runoff. I don’t know how that can be guaranteed, but supposing Sessions wins the runoff, one would think Trump would “have no choice” but to support Sessions in the general election, along with a public reconciliation of some sorts. How that would further the plan is unclear but maybe that’s the goal. It’s an incomplete theory at best, but it’s all I’ve got.
