‘You’re my hero’: Trump praises NYPD sergeant who beat coronavirus
President Trump expressed his gratitude to a New York police officer who returned to work after battling the coronavirus for the better part of a month.
NYPD Sargent Spencer Garrett joined Trump in the Rose Garden on Friday for a briefing about the coronavirus pandemic response. After Garrett said that his 8-year-old daughter was a hero to him during the ordeal, Trump sent the praise right back to Garrett.
“You’re my hero,” Trump told Garrett.
After recovering from the coronavirus, Garrett returned to work in the community of East Harlem, New York, and stated that Trump has shown great leadership during the crisis.
“I’d like to thank President Trump and the first lady for their unwavering support of the NYPD,” Garrett said. “As one of your hometown cops, I thank you for your leadership during these uncertain times.”
Garrett described the emotional moment he learned of his positive diagnosis and how he reassured his daughter that he would be OK.
“Breaking the news to my parents, Janet and James, my brothers Lee and Sam, and to my 8-year-old daughter Leeanna was downright scary,” Garrett added. “I saw the fear in their eyes. I looked at my daughter and I assured her, daddy wasn’t going anywhere.”
Garrett added that he was proud to join Trump in the Rose Garden.
“I’m honored to be here,” said Garrett. “I’m honored to be an NYPD Sargent, and, most of all, I’m honored to be an American.”
