Southwest Airlines is joining other major carriers in requiring passengers and employees who interact with them to wear face masks.
Starting Sunday, the Dallas-based airlines employees who have contact with passengers will be required to don face coverings. Passengers will be required starting May 11.
JetBlue started the trend April 27 when it said travelers would have to cover their noses and mouths during trips, beginning next week. Delta, Alaska, United and American quickly followed.

I got the last time I took a long distance flight.
A girl 4 rows behind me had a terrible cough. She was wearing a mask but I knew 1/2 the passengers on the plane were going to get sick.
I sure did. Don’t think it was Covid 19, but it might have been its precursor. I was sick for a month with a terrible, racking cough. Can’t imagine how bad Covid 19 must be for people who get sick.
I’m neither a flubro or a fearbro.
I want them to open 95%+ of the country. If that means wearing masks when in public and social distancing so be it. The economy is the far bigger problem now.
They said they needed time to bend the curve and we gave them that.
Yes it is, I could become a flubro.
Most places are making an exception for people who have a medical reason such as breathing difficulties.
Yeah, 66,000 and 2,000 a day.
That is after the CDC issued an order to RECLASSIFY any death even remotely related (cardiac arrest, car crash, lightning strike,...) to the WuhanChina virus as covid.
The ‘data’, you cite are totally politically corrupted. Probably not even half the numbers you believe.
I mean really, the US has one quarter of worldwide cv deaths? You honestly believe that?
Even if the ‘data’ you uncritically regurgitate were true it is still TINY in relation to the CON job reaction we are doing because of it.
“The remaining 50% then goes thru hospital grade filters.”
As long as they’re maintained, or even installed. Perhaps you can point us to the FAR requiring filtering for recirculating air?
“You are really into suspension of US Constitutional rights on these extremely specious grounds.”
Didn’t realize that Southwest Airlines is in charge of defending Constitutional rights.
Dr Martenson this week showed graphs of the average weekly mortality and deaths are up over previous years significantly. And more than can be accounted for by the official COVID counts.
And then there was a report out of Florida, that Coroners were releasing death data in real time, but it was exceeding the official Florida state counts, so Florida ordered the Coroner’s to stop releasing their data.
“How many neighbors did you turn in today, Eric?”
Only a couple, and they were endangering my parents.
Why do you ask?
What do you think CIO stands for?
Southwest always claimed to be competing with the private passenger automobile on short segments. If so, they are probably in worse shape than their competitors, for just the reason you mentioned. If people do have to make that 400 mile trip, now, they would much rather drive.
“I place it in the center console of the car and wear the same mask each time...Of course its 7-10 days between trips to the grocery store. And I go early in the morning before there are many customers and while the air is still fresh. And I dont wear it for more than about an hour...It cant be that contaminated, and the virus should be inactivated after that many days anyway.”
Same here, we wear ours for a short time when going out, and then only in low-viron environments.
As to condition of our masks - they’re fine after 24 hours of dormancy, if not less, and they’ll be fine for many weeks, given our very low usage rate. Now if I worked in a high-viron environment, like a hospital, I’d have a whole different answer regarding the continued use of the same masks.
It’s really only the FluBros who claim that a single viron, after sitting on a doorknob for 17 days, will infect and kill them. People who study this virus understand where the threats are, and where they are not.
Exactly
Not a real FReeper if he’s paraphrasing Lenin: “the worse, the better”
“if you believe your mask filters out the virus, then wear it and save your life.”
Don’t worry, I’m doing just that. I’ll be fine.
“But you have no right to assume that you are the only healthy person on the plane and that everyone else exists only to spread their deadly virus to your pristine body.”
While I agree with your depiction of my bod, my primary concern is the relatively small number of very dangerous super-spreaders - people who show no symptoms, but spread the virus like crazy. Countries which have been successful in controlling the virus simply didn’t let them spread it. Other countries didn’t give a damn if they took the train into Grand Central every day, sickening an entire city.
“Youre just frustrated because youve allowed yourself to be whipped up into a hysterical panic and youre unable to convince others to join in your self-inflicted misery.”
I don’t need to convince others - Southwest is doing it for me.
“You are really into suspension of US Constitutional rights on these extremely specious grounds.”
You guys give up that battle when it came to rights of people to smoke cigarettes. Where were you guys? Probably on the side of the non-smokers, if I had to wager money. If not, I certainly didn’t hear jack from you then.
I don't think his intent was to paraphrase Lenin.
The reason he wanted more cases, not less, was to reach herd immunity as soon as possible.
So he was against masks because he wants it to spread faster.
“Masks aren’t perfect protection, but they do help. And they help more if everyone wears them.”
You’re being generous to the FluBros here. Masks are near 100% effective in South Korea and they ARE 100% effective in Taiwan. They work, and even the FluBros know it - they just think they look silly wearing them.
Really? Name one flubros that has ever demanded that you give up your right to wear a mask or hide in your basement in fear until big daddy government tells you its safe to come out? They might make fun of you for it, but wouldnt dream of interfering with your delusion. You have lost all logical perspective on what is necessary for a free society to function.
Most places are making an exception for people who have a medical reason such as breathing difficulties.
Oh wow. Thats comforting. They will allow me an exemption. In order to get that exemption I have to forfeit my medical privacy rights. I find it interesting that working in a hospital lab I am legally prohibited from viewing my own or any family members lab results. Yet some schlub flight attendant that I dont know from Adam has the right to my personal medical history in order for me to not have to suffer while traveling. Meanwhile any wacko can bring their emotional support pet on the plane because of some bogus anxiety issues and too bad for me if I object.
Masks were required in 1918 in this country, and we’re still free.
We’ve been here before. This will pass. Hopefully, it’ll be a hundred years before hit happens again.
Should be well on your way to getting that hard-earned armband, Erik.
“That is after the CDC issued an order to RECLASSIFY any death even remotely related (cardiac arrest, car crash, lightning strike,...) to the WuhanChina virus as covid.”
Funny how it was the OTHER WAY in NYC, when they found 3,000 extra deaths that were NOT classified as Coronavirus, but probably should have been. So, if anything, the death count for Coronavirus is ARTIFICIALLY LOW. But then again, FluBros will simply IGNORE this fact.
