One of my regrets is not making it to Pompeii. I was in Naples but there was an earthquake and Pompeii was closed for about 10 years. They were supposed to be starting flights from Granada to Naples in the fall but who knows what’s going to happen now.

We have two letters which Pliny the Younger wrote to his friend Tacitus (6.16 and 6.18) describing the eruption and the death of his uncle Pliny the Elder. Tacitus would have included an account in his Histories but that section is not preserved--in any case Tacitus was not an eyewitness.
