I would submit, as an addition to the list, Brian Connolly of The Sweet. He had a voice like no other that I’ve ever heard before or since. Liked two songs in particular — (1) Set Me Free (from their Desolation Boulevard release) and (2) Action (from their Give Us a Wink release).

Not sure if it was Creem, Crawdaddy, or another rock magazine — but there was a poll of Best Voice, and Connolly beat out Ian Gillan of Deep Purple. His life tragically ended way too soon, due to chronic alcoholism.

Another amazing voice? Mickey Thomas.

I loved him singing Fooled Around and Fell in Love by Elvin Bishop the first time I heard it all those years ago and every time since.

What fun that must be to be able to sing like that.

I don’t really care for vocals in general, but Robert Lamm with Chicago is one of a few exceptions. Peter Cetera, not so much.

For single vocal performances, I'd go with:

Elvis Presley – Suspicious Minds

Greg Allman – Whipping Post

Joe Cocker –Unchain My Heart

David Clayton-Thomas – God Bless the Child

Jim Morrison – Roadhouse Blues

Eric Burdon – House of the Rising Sun

Van Morrison – Into the Mystic

Grace Slick - Somebody to Love

Kate Bush – Running up that Hill

Janis Joplin – Piece of My Heart

or anything by Eric Clapton if we are doing only males.

Janis Joplin and Bonnie Bramlett best female vocalists IMO

Dunno. I'd really have to find a spot for something Steve Perry has done on this list. He's got so many great ones it's hard to pick.

One controversial pick I might have is possibly Axl Rose, perhaps "Welcome to the Jungle". A vocal that was completely unique at the time.

God, I hate the Doors.

How about something by Robert Palmer (Everyday People), Rod Stewart (Mandolin Wind), Bob Seger (Night Moves) or Greg Lake (Lend Your Love to Me Tonight)?

IMNSHO, the greatest voices in rock are:

1. Bob Dylan
2. Leonard Cohen
3. Tom Waits
4. Marianne Faithfull (old, world weary Marianne, not the young sappy soprano)
5. Patti Smith

Flame away!

The linked version of Aerosmith doing Dream On live has got to be the worse performance Tyler has ever done of the song!!!

Who picked out what vids to show? Often they’re awful. For example, Sinatra. Frank’s voice from the 1950s was smooth like silk, but from the last few years of his life, let’s face it, he was awful, raspy, and he often couldn’t remember all the lyrics. I saw him in Frankfurt, Germany in 1995. I was dismayed, as I had bragged to my German friends about his pipes.

I don’t listen to old Sinatra. Just the younger one. Much better.
