” Doctors report seeing patients who wait too long to seek care, including those who do not feel the symptoms of plummeting oxygen levels, such as shortness of breath, until they are in crisis. No one is sure why. Many peoples lungs remain flexible for a while, allowing carbon dioxide out and forestalling the sensation they arent getting enough oxygen. “
So send them home WITH OXIMETERS.
IF that coagulation problem occurs after low oxygen then a huge number of people could be given effective treatment early, when needed.
Promptness of treatment/support seems to be the best indicator for a successful recovery. (Not the whole story of course.)

I thought to replace mine early (finger device) in the pandemic and no luck at the local pharm. Another hoarding item, I suppose. OTOH, not so much demand meant not so many on the shelves to begin with.
The good news is, if you have a 2019-20 fitness tracker, it probably has a passable spo2 function.
According to website, wareable:
the “Charge 3, Fitbit Ionic or any Versa smartwatch” has the function but “Inspire or Alta trackers don’t”
“Garmin... Fenix 6X, Fenix 5X, Vivoactive 4 and Forerunner 245/645/945”
” the Withings ScanWatch”
