Artist Vito Paulekas was also a key figure in the development of the hippie movement. In 1963, he and his wife had formed a dance troupe which began to frequent nightclubs on the Sunset Strip which drew patrons to these establishments. They were known for their eccentric form of free form dancing as well as their odd clothing and hair styles. At the time they referred to themselves as freaks, but the later term of ‘hippies’ eventually began to be applied to them. Operating a boutique in the Laurel Canyon area of Los Angeles, they soon became associated with the emerging music scene in the area which spawned such groups as the Byrds, The Doors, and many others which eventually spearheaded the counter culture movement.
