A bit dirty??? Ever been to a wet market in Taiwan? Blood, guts, poop everywhere. Never saw anyone putting ice on meat displayed for sale. Wanta buy some chicken guts? Lady holds an intestine up and cuts off what you want. Clean the poop out later.
The fish wet market I was in was even worse. Dead fish laying everywhere. Want a piece of fish? Butcher tosses a fish on the table and cuts it up in front of you scraping the guts off the table as he works.
Yes, I’ve been to them in Taiwan and in Hong Kong and Singapore.
Taiwan’s are the worst. After SAR’s Hong Kong and Singapore really cleaned theirs up. But, there are still rats about and flies; and that butcher’s apron doesn’t look like it has been washed since 1955.
I wouldn’t let my wife buy meat there unless it was the frozen meat store, just vegetables.
But, there is a difference, at least in my mind, in butchering wild game and domestic chickens. It took some real getting used to when I first moved to Asia.
