It would melt the plastic filaments holding it together. It might damage the elastic.

Leaving it it bright sunlight will let the UV light damage the cells. But it needs to out the for a while. Again, you will wreck the elastic.

If you are using all cotton, the worst it would do is scorch it.

Polyester will melt under high enough temps.

And with polyester, it depends on if it’s 100% or a cotton.poly blend.

When I iron some of my quilting fabrics, I often really nuke it.

The same with my husbands hankies and our pillow cases.

You just have to try it on a scrap piece of fabric to see how high you can go, at least with the ones you make yourself.

I looked at that - maybe I missed it - what were the test conditions for the mask?

FRANCE
PARIS (Reuters) - The number of people in intensive care units (ICU) for coronavirus infection in France fell slightly for the first time since the start of the epidemic, but the number of people dying in nursing homes jumped by more than 50 percent over two days, health ministry data showed on Thursday.

But in a sign that the epidemic is still raging through French senior citizen homes, ministry data showed that the cumulative toll there jumped by 929 deaths, or 52%, to 4,166 over two days after a technical problem prevented the registration of deaths in nursing homes on Wednesday,

Including the deaths in hospitals, up by 412 or 5% to 8,044, the total death toll rose by 1,341 or 12% to 12,210 people, the world’s fourth-heaviest toll after Italy, Spain and the United States.

The ministry also reported that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in hospitals rose by 4,286 or 5% to 86,334 while the number of confirmed, probable or possible cases in nursing homes rose by 513 or 2% to 31,415.

The total number of confirmed, probable or possible cases in hospitals and nursing homes - which the ministry does not report separately - increased by 4,799 or 4% to 117,749.

To estimate the number of coronavirus infections in nursing homes where patients show symptoms, France only tests a few residents.

It will be fascinating to see the Easter plans of folks this weekend. It will be cool to keep a list of where they are congregating, and then watching infections two weeks later.

But, “They can’t keep me from church, yo.”

Not sure when I related the story. But that 30something woman we know who had it and slept for 2 entire weeks lost 30lbs. She wasn’t overweight to begin with. The only thing she ate was a single can of blackeyed peas her hubby apparently ‘mothered’ her into eating. She’s got to be emaciated heroin addict skinny now.

And she’s not really eating a whole lot because her smell/taste still hasn’t returned over a week since ‘symptoms’ (the tiredness and soreness) disappeared.

I find that concerning. Long term neurological damage is not something to scoff at.

It appears that many ovens will run @ 150 deg. F (warm, defrost, etc.) and 20 minutes of that should zap any virus.

HOWEVER, if the oven elements run hot (esp. glowing hot), direct radiation might get the mask hot enough to damage it even though the air temperature in the oven is only 150 deg. (This is like asphalt under one’s feet on an 85 deg. sunny day.) A mask has low mass / thermal inertia, so it would heat up quickly. A convection setting (if available) should help.

This said, I used a temperature gun on a N95 mask in our big toaster oven set on “Defrost” and the mask did not seem to be getting over 155 deg. Granted that the mask being low thermal mass would start cooling the second cooler air comes in the oven door.

OTOH, looking at the Lancet table, it appears to me one could warm the oven to 150-160 deg F, turn it off, quickly pop in the mask (masks in a larger oven) & close up, and let it all coast for 30 minutes. If paranoid, pull the mask out and repeat.

https://www.thelancet.com/cms/10.1016/S2666-5247(20)30003-3/attachment/34ed069e-7268-42ae-8627-df3aa869d81b/mmc1.pdf

Disclaimer: I’m not an expert and have no way to test the above for virus “baking” reduction or mask performance later, besides looking for obvious mask damage.

That’s what I was looking at. I don’t see a temperature given for the surface & materials comparisons. I’d guess room temp.
