Of those who recovered, some lost their genitals, their fingers, or toes; some, their eyesight. Others suffered amnesia.
and is apt to reinforce the existent skepticism regarding the globalist vision that has long inspired the good and the great in the post-Cold War West.
Not so sure it (globalism) inspired the good or the great. It inspired the elites to gain control over the peasants more than it inspired the good & great, in my opinion.
But otherwise, I thought it was an excellent read.
Among many others, we must be grateful to President Trump for his positive attitude and encouragement of all the people of the world. He is to be praised and thanked!
"Overpowered by the violence done by the evil and not knowing what would become of them, human beings became neglectful of things alike sacred and profane... the plague...gave rise to a marked increase in lawlessness."
We must also be grateful to President Trump for devoting his many great gifts--intelligence, puissance, leadership qualities, benevolence--to guiding America through this crisis.
Thank him for closing the US Borders to travel from China.
Thank him for benevolently devoting his brilliance to making the US economy strong, great, and powerful, before this pandemic struck, so that it was possible to grant money to the American People, when it had struck. Had America been filled with starving, impoverished people, violence would have been a serious problem.
President Trump's leadership has been magnificent.
As a physician, I do every moment of my life.
Thucydidess grim description is a sobering and salutary reminder of what we owe modern science and medicine"
...and to Almighty God.
I prayed for a cure for the horrible diseases I helped treat as a medical student--and for my patients. Since then, I have seen miraculous advances in medicine. E.g., childhood leukaemia was universal fatal. I will never forget the children I helped treat. Today it is, in most cases, curable.
Thank You, my Lord.
The modern complex world is also a miracle and a gift from God. Everyone has access to education. Research and treatment of disease are institutionalised and efficient. Knowledge is systematically pursued.
Thank You, my Lord.
And I thank God every day for giving the world President Trump.
His intelligence, his puissance, his strength, his benevolence, and his leadership are priceless Gifts from God.
Thank You, my Lord.
I first read Thucydides back in the 1970s, cruising across the Peloponnesian Peninsula in a bus.
The Peloponnesian War is one of the world's most beautiful works of literature. Thucydides' language is beautiful, even in translation.
I re-read parts of it last summer, including the tragic Melian Dialogue, as my ship approached the Island of Melos.
Art does not have to be high to be fun and exciting. We get a kick out of all sorts of art, from pop music to contemporary fiction, every day--and we love it.
But it is from high art, such as The Peloponnesian War, that we learn profound truth and great knowledge.
It's worth the effort to learn it. I'm currently reading the Mahabharata (note tagline). It is magnificent.
