Yes, you read that correctly - COBOL!

Any takers Freeper's?

This is what happens when you don't maintain systems!

I think I used COBAL on a Univac 55 back in 1968 or so.

There is still a boatload of COBOL code out there, especially in the banking industry, and the old programmers are retiring and younger ones have no idea how to code in such an environment

No short term fixes.

Long term strategy:

1) End the H1B visas. No more foreign programmers.
2) Raise salaries of US programmers.
3) Update SW at the unemployment offices, the power companies, the IRS, and a host of other areas.

We have a lot of whizz-bang stuff, but the nation is a lot more fragile than some people think, and IT is really NOT a good career field — too much foreign competition, lots of age discrimination, and the salaries, while OK, are not nearly what they should be.

I don’t think any Universities teach that and haven’t taught it in like 20 years. I took COBOL in College in the Mid 1980’s, most of the COBOL programmers working today are all in their 50’s and 60’s, many have retired as most organizations have moved away from it. There may be still some Systems still using COBOL, but those are being phased out.

If your solution is to fix a 40 year legacy program to interact with modern systems recently built the truth is, you don’t actually have a solution.

Yeah. I knew it quite well back in the day. Worked with it a lot and could probably get right back into it with a little research. I think I even still have books on it around here someplace.
However, just their stance alone on the 2nd Amendment, their crappy gun laws and how they treat gun owners, I wouldn’t crap down their throats if they were starving to death. They can go take a flying “F” at a slow rolling donut.

For what it was developed for COBOL was a great business programming language. A good programmer could write the code so the programs were pretty well self documenting for easy maintenance. Taught Fortran, RPG, assembler, C, COBOL, Basic all thru the 80's in a 2 year college and always found good COBOL code the best for what it was designed for, Business, not gaming or graphics.

Sorry Jersey, coded systems for almost 25 years up to 2003, but I wouldn't travel east of the mississippi for all the virus in china.

Ah, COBOL. Back in the 60s I help my father learn the language.

I reach my Full Retirement Age in four months. If someone wants to pay me $12K/week I might consider picking it up again. No? Then I'll stick with C, C++, Perl, and Python at my current $DAYJOB.

It's Not That Hard.

If they understood the program logic then they could rewrite the program in another language. Of course, if they could understand logic they wouldn't be democrats, or working in state gov'ment.
