With the treadle machine, just get it started with your hand as you start to push with your feet. Won’t be a problem at all.
I had a terrible time with it. When you let up on the treadle even a tiny bit, it goes backwards and wrecks what you just sewed. I’m sure there’s a technique to it. Maybe keeping your hand on the wheel when you stop to keep it from turning backwards.
