Two contradictory lines from the article:
Joel, told the Forward he had given the drug regimen to more than 500 moderately ill people and no more than a handful needed hospitalization.

Joel, in Orange County, N.Y., had given the drug cocktail to more than 500 patients, and none required hospitalization.

Did you notice on which dates the drug was given? Most times that sort of thing is considered sort of mandatory?

My take is the “none required hospitalization” was from an interview a few days before. The “handful needed hospitalization” was at the time this article was composed.
