Why can't I go for a ride in my car during a shelter in place order?

Posted on 03/24/2020 4:48:37 PM PDT by nuconvert

Why are bicyclists allowed to ride anywhere they want - out in the country, up in the mountains, etc, but I can't go for a ride in my car the same places?

What reason do city/state officials give for people not being able to get out & enjoy a nice drive?

15 mph National Speed Limit. For the children! And the Grandpas! Who could be against it? < / sarcasm >

I am a security guard at a shipyard that has a USCG contract. It is, therefore “essential.” And if the yard were to close it would have to have more guards, anyway. I am in the unfamiliar position of liking going to work.

Not sure about other states, but the lockdown rules here say you can drive to restaurants, grocery stores, drug stores, gas stations, places of worship, checking on the welfare of others, banks, post offices, etc., etc.

55mph interstate limit was a huge money maker for the state of Ohio back in the day. Highway Patrol was a prolific ticket writer for sure.

Hadn’t heard of anyplace that had shut down the roads. And what cop is going to waste his time, and risk needless exposure stopping someone going about his own business. Doesn’t seem likely to me...

I’m headed to the grocery store. I’ll try the one 50 miles away since mine is out of beef. Essential travel, you understand. And since there’s a beef shortage, I’ll need to drive around the countryside and count cows. Essential travel, you understand.

Hell, here in NM, the chicken little gov democrat shut down all golf courses and even had the State Police go to one course to force it... BUTT you can exercise on a walk or bike?! More opportunities to contact others on the sidewalk than on fairway #9... F/ these over reacting a holes!

Sorry office. I’m heading to the gun store. It’s essential that I get more ammo.

I’m sure I can claim they’re necessarily. But I was out strictly because I’m bored.

“and the others, no matter if they have much less population density, feel the need to follow suit.”

Yes, you are exactly right. It's rather “monkey see..monkey do.” Also an opportunity to overreach. Some have closed gun shops which don't appear to be a petri dish environment.

Same with the age bracket assumptions. Wuhan can't read ID cards so age is just a class with associated risks. Co-morbidities have been the more relevant factor.

Isn't it great to be in an open carry state?

Nope, when Mr CCE goes out on his bike, it’s 40 to 60 mile round trip.

"Can’t you drive to the supermarket or pharmacy, both of which are essential?"

Heh. Then a cop will avoid getting too close. ;)

I really cant tell the slightest difference here with our shelter in place order except a few shops are closed. Everyone going everywhere using all vehicle modes and walking.

"Because people on bikes keep their actions mostly limited to the neighbourhood."

If a biker sneezes, he can infect more people in one second than a runner or auto driver can. The biker sheds the germs as he flys by. Ever walk in NYC and there's a crack smoking biker pass you by? You can smell it till he long gone. I figure the same applies to a virus.

Biking should be stopped for now...at least in NYC.
