March 23 (Reuters) - An Arizona man has died and his wife is in critical condition after they ingested chloroquine phosphate - an aquarium cleaning product similar to drugs that have been named by President Trump as potential treatments for coronavirus infection.

The couple, in their 60s, experienced immediate distress after swallowing the drug, an additive used at aquariums to clean fish tanks, according to Banner Health Hospital in Phoenix.

Chloroquine phosphate shares the same active ingredient as malaria drugs that President Trump has touted as possibly effective against COVID-19, the potentially life-threatening disease caused by the coronavirus.

-- many reading the article might not understand the difference. --

The vast majority won't. This is deliberate misinformation by the press. Status quo for them.

They are all the National Enquirer.

I would not be surprised if the media lumps all chlorquine phosphate deaths in with the Corona virus deaths to make the statistics fit the narrative. As it is, I believe many folks die of whatever their underlying pathologies might be and are counted as Corona deaths even if they only had the sniffles.

Person goes blind after drinking methyl alcohol, a product that is similar to whiskey.

The press is a danger to society. Net, it is a harmful force.

Headline Reuters “Arizona man dies after taking chloroquine for coronavirus”. what they don’t tell you is what they took was chloroquine phosphate - an aquarium cleaning product. More fake media BS

Exactly. A lot of people are dying with coronavirus, but not of coronavirus.

I didn't read the article, but I'm guessing, "Honey, I scored some chloroquine"

Also, a misleading, no, lying headline. The drug did not kill them.

You are right. This was done intentionally and deliberately. The author knew that many people are going to now be saying that Trump’s drug killed someone.

I am totally disgusted.

It’s the correct drug, but I doubt that it’s the correct dosage.
The aquarium industry uses it to get rid of algae and parasites.
If you take 2 aspirins for a headache, taking 50 tablets will probably kill you.

They each took a teaspoon of the stuff, with an unknown concentration. Maybe 15 times the regular dose.

I was looking for that info, but missed it. Thanks.

A teaspoon is 1/6 of an ounce, which is about 4.5 to 5 grams. The normal dose is around a quarter of a gram. Yep, 15x overdose, more or less. Maybe they even took a heaping teaspoon.

Aspirin overdoses killed a lot of people during the 1918 Pandemic.

As pointed out by another FReeper, chloroquine phosphate IS the anti-malarial drug that is being used. Hydroxychloroquine is a less toxic derivative of chloroquine, and it is also being used - though it may be somewhat less effective than chloroquine. Clearly, Reuters was unethical in the way they phrased the headline, and they have a hateful agenda. That being the case, we should respond accurately, and point out that taking a ‘not for human consumption’ product that contains a substance used as medication is not in any way the same as taking the medication.

There are many, many people taking warfarin (Coumadin) as an anticoagulant. That does NOT mean they should go out and buy warfarin-containing rat poison and take this instead.

Based on one of the original recommendations put out which was for men to shave off their beards so as not to spread the virus; I have been tempted to post a suggestion that people could cut their chances of infection by shaving their heads. It would be telling to see how many shave their heads in this panic.

Fear and media-driven hysteria is what killed this man.

It could be religion. These might be some of the same people who attend those snake-handler churches.

Not to mention that the aquarium product is probably supposed to be diluted in 50 gallons of water.

After Chernobyl there were people who were not only taking iodine pills, they painted their entire bodies with tincture of iodine. I remember seeing pictures of them in the MSM at that time. Might have been Three Mile Island.
