The Vikings peacefully farmed after pushing the slaughtered victims' bodies to one side. :^) Of course, anyone who has British Isles roots will find a hefty batch of Scandinavian DNA from the medieval times, as will some people with ancestry in coastal France, northern Germany, and of course, Scandinavia / Iceland.

[snip] The Romans did later recover the lost legions’ eagles, one each in 15 AD, 16 AD and 42 AD. [/snip]

A few years later Arminius was chased down, his forces got their asses handed to them, he fled like the coward he was, and eventually the Roman price on his head resulted in his killing by the kinsmen with whom he was staying.

”Contrary to popular belief, the Vikings were simply peaceful farmers”

I imagine the monks of Ireland, Britain and France had slightly different opinions of the simple Viking “traders” that carried off most of the wealth of the monasteries.

There’s an old joke, I can’t remember it well enough to do anything but paraphrase, basically, that learning doesn’t progress because new information arises and everyone integrates it into their own learning/teaching, but because the opponents gradually die off.

I’m 81, and my wife is close to 80.

We have commented about our lives based on your posting above.

She laughs about how I began to eliminate the losers/idiots in my life at 40 and had basically finished that task at age 50. Then, I took early retirement at age 56 and finished up ridding the losers in my company and customers. That wasn’t just people. I eliminated most tv, movies, magazines.

We cut our tv cable 3 years ago.

Your analogy...LOL
In separating the wheat from the chaff I’ve found far more chaff than decades earlier.

Okay time for you to step up to the plate and eliminate the chaff/losers from your life. :)

All those “woke” enlightened folk understand that swords, battle axes, and such were merely intermediate elements of creating plowshares. And contrary to now debunked claims, shields were not a defense against pre-farming implements, rather they were just cumbersome parasols to avert nasty UV rays, primitive sunscreens.

"How much of our ancient history is based on bs/lies/????."

Actually, government indoctrination asylums are teaching the children much of U.S. history is based on bs/lies... Just as they have been for the past several decades... Very successfully at that...

What the heck?

It’s not like the people in those areas gave the Peaceful Farmers any choice!
What were the Peaceful Farmers supposed to do when the locals refused to give up all their goods, lands and women to support the needs of the Peaceful Farmers?

Those claiming victim status only got what they deserved by being so greedy.

Being fortunate to have spent today clambering over one of these monuments, I cannot believe they were constructed as fashion. If they spread in a relatively short time period of 50 years, that strikes me as supporting the notion that they were built in response to a crisis or perceived threat.
As always, thanks for posting.

Probably should approach this with some caution, because there's a heavy bias against the hillforts actually having been forts. The kumbaya idea that somehow our peaceful ancestors lived in peace in peaceful surroundings of their own making is trying to strangle serious research in Britain, just as it is here.

If time permits, could you expand a bit on this? I only dip a toe in the subject from time to time, usually while in incidental pursuit of some tangential issue. I am aware that the peaceable kingdom fantasists have infiltrated relevant disciplines, but I also thought that the homo homini lupus/nature red in tooth and claw realists have always hung in the fight, and that the balance was perhaps swinging back their way due to the last generation's archaeological finds evidencing conflict.

[snip] The Romans did later recover the lost legions’ eagles, one each in 15 AD, 16 AD and 42 AD. [/snip]

Yes but two of these Legions were never rebuilt (XVIII briefly under Nero) and their losses of ~88% (~18k deaths & enslaved) deeply crippled both the actual military might and, more importantly, the 'invincible' reputation of the Roman Legions. Truly, this battle & loss probably marked the high-water of Rome, at least in the North.

The historian Seutonius writes of Augustus beating his head against a wall, crying; "Quintili Vare, legiones redde!" (Quintilius Varus, give me back my legions!) George A Custer was, by comparison, equally stupid and overly confident but a piker by comparison!

"... nature red in tooth and claw..."

I'm sorry but you have just outed yourself as irredeemably deplorable with this referral to a DWEM quote (Alfred, Lord Tennyson). Your name is now on the list of the next 'D' Administration's to be done list! On a good note, at least you avoided quoting Kipling, that would have really marked you in RED!

Who trusted God was love indeed
And love Creation's final law
Tho' Nature, red in tooth and claw
With ravine, shriek'd against his creed
