I just got back from trying to get some common items I need in my refrigerator: carrots, Lactaid milk, and Stok unsweetened coffee. Now I feel very depressed and apprehensive for what's gonna be coming up in the next few weeks.
Went to BJs, as they have great prices on all of the above. I walked into a near-empty store--and immediately the theme music from "The Twilight Zone" started playing. Vegetables--pretty wiped out, and NO carrots. Milk--NO milk of any kind, except goat milk. Guys, you can have my portion of the goat milk! I bought some Silk Almond Milk just to have something. I felt like I'd been slapped, like I had stepped into a nightmare. Here I was in America, and I was being forced to live like someone in a turd world country, with extensive food shortages.
I continued on to Wegmans, and was treated to pretty much the same experience. There was a sign over the carrots -- "Limit: 2 bags of carrots"--but they needn't have bothered, as there WERE no carrots to buy. I needed some for a recipe, so I bought baby food carrots. And a goo-goo to you, too! When I reached the dairy section, I was reminded of Texas--lots of WIDE OPEN SPACES. No milk in sight, and only a few cartons of eggs. I grabbed some eggs, as I needed to buy them before Passover.
As if I didn't hate China, murderous land of selling political prisoners' body parts and the most heinous methods of torturing and killing numerous animal species I ever heard of before, now they are firmly in my sights. I realize that not being able to buy carrots, milk, or refrigerated coffee does not begin to approach the horrible ramifications of the coronavirus plague on many families, putting wage-earners out of work itself, bringing death to loved ones, preventing freedom of movement, and all the other negative changes to our lives, but it's what happened to me now, so far. The food shortage was sufficient to bring it home to me, realtime.
How are the rest of you suffering and how are you coping? I feel for all Americans' suffering induced by the unspeakable lowlife Chinese and their selfishness.

It’s been hit or miss on things you can’t stock pile.
We have a ton of City people coming out here thinking our Walmart is better stocked.

Oh no, no more bat soup, all sold out. But plenty of TP and pasta.
Same in Eastern Nevada - even the salsa racks were empty. Salsa fer Chrissakes.
I grew up on powdered milk. Not a single effing way I’ll go that route again.

I was in WinCo here in Roseville yesterday. Shelves were well stocked. Seemed like a normal day except aisle with tp and some cleaning wipes.
Dang! I just had a terrible craving for bat soup.
Hummm.....not at first....with all the goods manufactured in China it’s going to take time to bring our companies home or set up new ones here.....meanwile China will be up and running producing and shipping their goods.
Diapers! Didn’t think about that one, yikes! Glad our kids are bigger, just TP for now
I passed a true country corner store and they were still stocked.
You might want to take a moment to thank those poor folks working the grocery business.
The clerks at my local jumbo mart look like they are prisoners of war.
Just think of all the scared/unhappy people they have been dealing with for weeks now.
All this drama seems to be related to life in the big city.
Out here in the sticks only a very few items are consistently out of stock.
TP and fresh fish constantly, but eggs, chicken, plain bottled water, cold cereals, bread, and some fruits/vegetables only intermittently.
Everything but TP is restocked more than once a week.
TP is probably restocked too, but sold out again before my next visit.
Most everything else is available all the time.
Noticed today that the big crowds are gone too, so inventory should return to fully normal soon.
Darlin', when you strictly observe the Jewish Sabbath, there is a very short list of what you're allowed to do: Pray, take a walk, study Torah, eat, take a nap, or read. Now the synagogues are closed so you're on your own, just you or you and your family. I don't want the paperbacks just because, but I need them in order not to go stir crazy during these long daylight savings time Sabbaths. Now do you understand my urgency about acquiring said books?
Things are so bad, no one is even inviting others to their seder. My neighbor and I are doing a seder together, just the two of us. Her children don't want her near the grandkids lest she catch something from them, and my peoples are sheltering in place.
What makes you think I haven't?
My subscribe and save (Amazon) almond milk has been delayed this month.
Last night, I was in Belle Plaine Mn, a town of about 6600 people just southwest of Minneapolis. It’s exurban with a lot of rural small town appeal.
The wife and I visited a Coborn’s there. Toilet paper was gone. Bread was gone. Eggs were gone. In the canned vegetables area, you could see there was definite activity but it was possible to find what you were looking for.
There was plenty of milk and cheese. Frozen foods looked fine. The produce area looked to be in good shape.
There were a lot of stock kids working the floor. I asked the cashier if it was crazy and she said “Not as bad as the weekend and Monday. It’s cooled off. People aren’t coming up with overflowing grocery carts”
Mine, is of course, only one perspective and one snapshot in time.
While bars and restaurants are closed in Minnesota, liquor stores remain open. Sales starting last week were at holiday levels. Customers were stocking up particularly on beer. Sale of boxed wine was up as moms prepared to be stuck home with their kids.
