How well is YOUR grocery stocked?
Local groceries | 3/19/20 | Me, Myself, and I

Posted on 03/19/2020 8:03:21 PM PDT by EinNYC

I just got back from trying to get some common items I need in my refrigerator: carrots, Lactaid milk, and Stok unsweetened coffee. Now I feel very depressed and apprehensive for what's gonna be coming up in the next few weeks.

Went to BJs, as they have great prices on all of the above. I walked into a near-empty store--and immediately the theme music from "The Twilight Zone" started playing. Vegetables--pretty wiped out, and NO carrots. Milk--NO milk of any kind, except goat milk. Guys, you can have my portion of the goat milk! I bought some Silk Almond Milk just to have something. I felt like I'd been slapped, like I had stepped into a nightmare. Here I was in America, and I was being forced to live like someone in a turd world country, with extensive food shortages.

I continued on to Wegmans, and was treated to pretty much the same experience. There was a sign over the carrots -- "Limit: 2 bags of carrots"--but they needn't have bothered, as there WERE no carrots to buy. I needed some for a recipe, so I bought baby food carrots. And a goo-goo to you, too! When I reached the dairy section, I was reminded of Texas--lots of WIDE OPEN SPACES. No milk in sight, and only a few cartons of eggs. I grabbed some eggs, as I needed to buy them before Passover.

As if I didn't hate China, murderous land of selling political prisoners' body parts and the most heinous methods of torturing and killing numerous animal species I ever heard of before, now they are firmly in my sights. I realize that not being able to buy carrots, milk, or refrigerated coffee does not begin to approach the horrible ramifications of the coronavirus plague on many families, putting wage-earners out of work itself, bringing death to loved ones, preventing freedom of movement, and all the other negative changes to our lives, but it's what happened to me now, so far. The food shortage was sufficient to bring it home to me, realtime.

How are the rest of you suffering and how are you coping? I feel for all Americans' suffering induced by the unspeakable lowlife Chinese and their selfishness.

I expected some panic type buying, too, but never dreamed it would be like this.

Guns are in short supply in many areas, and the wait time for background checks is much longer than usual.

Ammo is being limited by stores, even in states that are gun friendly, just to keep the supply going.

BTW, pressure canning meats works great and you never have to worry about freezer burn or no electricity.

I like the idea of this site.

We are drowning in books, not just paperbacks.

This could be a godsend, unless of course, mr. mm orders more.

Gosh, sounds almost as awful as our troops faced in the winter in mountains of Afghanistan, or summers in Iraq, maybe winter time in Bastogne in ‘44.

Not trying to be uncaring but there is still food stuffs even if it’s not our first or maybe second choice by the time the hoarders get through.

In my area, some stores are open one hour early for seniors, those with health challenges, etc. Some stores will even shop for you to drive by and pick up.

I’m with you on that goats milk and cheese though, it’s only fit for goats (or kids!)

I went to local Albertsons (Orange County, ca) last night to pickup hubby prescription. The bread delivery had just arrived, they were unloading bacon/sausage/hot dogs etc..
But no toilet paper! Fruit, vegetables were scarce but it was late.
Happy to grab some bread, bagels & bacon.
They did have milk, OJ & eggs too.

I can tell you that the local Cabela’s was sold out of handguns last week. Popular caliber ammo is gone everywhere around Northern Nevada.

And you’re considering a long gun or hand gun?

I’ve only been out few times to grab essentials but I’ve thanked every person in that grocery store that I come into contact (6 feet away) with. There was a guy last night unloading the bacon, sausage shipment & looked so tired but took the time to tell me what items he had in the box & I didn’t even ask.. Everyone at stores so cheery & helpful too..it’s bizarre! maybe they’re delirious 😂 Except for the deli crew but they always seem grumpy.

Is that something we import? (the ammo)?

Or import the ingredients to make it?

Ie, has there been a massive run on ammo or just a moderate one combined with supply chain failure?

Not sure, perhaps just another shotgun to get folks off my lawn if they come for my beer stash.

Ah.

shotguns are underrated for home defense.

People run to get the snazzy guns usually. The ‘looksie’ ones.

All I can report is what I saw today at a range in Idaho - I was the only one there shooting and every employee was occupied filling out Form 4473 for a customer for the background check. Talked to the owner and he said it was crazy, been like that all day, but he had plenty of stock and plenty of ammunition. When I finished and he checked me out he joked, "Look around - these are the only eight people in the state who don't have a gun."

I know it's been said but I'll repeat it - it isn't the disease, it's the crazies who are the problem. If you still have the shotgun, buy ammo. Actually getting your new gun at this point is a project of several days at best. Make sure there is ammo available for it - buy the ammo when you give them the form if you can. Your mileage will vary greatly depending on where you are. Best to you.
