They used to be called “State Stores” when they were totally run by the commonwealth in monopolistic fashion. Now they are called “Wine & Spirits Shops” and at least some of them are independent franchises. Most had closed down in my area north of Philadelphia. The few that were still open last weekend were the independents — now they have been ordered closed as well. The commonwealth buys all wine and liquor wholesale and distributes it at the local level from the shops.
This has always been a major political football in Pennsylvania. The unions that staffed the system were politically powerful and resistant to changing the system.
How are the hospitals going to handle the pandemic of DTs?
CLOSED FOR BUSINESS. Check it.
Fire up the still.
Yes, exactly. This is a triple whammy - (a) PA Gov Dumbdemf---stick has just encouraged panic travel and waved the checkered flag, (b) they'll get drunk in Ohio and drive back to Pennsyltucky (the part of PA we love, btw), and (c) those without wheels or access will go into DTs, head for the hospital and be the single most vulnerable vector there. Big mistake.
I understand he closed all the state owned rest stops.
Hope the trucking industry doesn’t hit a stone wall.
That tax didn't last very long. One of the very rare times a tax in Massachusetts got rolled back.
“...Doesn’t the state government in PA actually run the liquor stores?...”
Yes. Been that way for a long time. Different groups are trying to change it to a privatized system, but so far it has not been successful.
this is a bad bad idea and will cause huge problems.
Alcohol is an anxiety reducer, and is addictive.
People are anxious now, and even non alcoholics are drinking more than usual.
Alcoholics will begin breaking into homes for liquor.
they will withdraw into DTs WHICH IS ALOMST 30% FATAL WITHOUT MEDICAL INTERVENTION thus overburdening an already overloaded medical system.
There is no upside, and people will die.
They have this very very wrong.
Governments love any excuse to extend their tyrannical power.
Yeah. The NJ Turnpike is gonna get busy.
Pennsylvanians can still buy alcohol at the grocery store.
Back when I was still drinking we had a blizzard in MN. I had stocked up with beer and had enough to last 3 days.
A lady slid her car into our yard and knocked down a tree. She was very upset. My dad took my beer and he & that lady drank all of it!
I began climbing the walls. I put a call into my cousin. He packed up all his single cans of beer and brought them over via SNOWMOBILE. God bless him. He needed to get away from his wife. Win Win for all.
Apparatus on line.
Just needed the excuse.
You forgot Idaho, and I think Oregon, too.
Ha! Ha! Ha!
Minnesotans know winter!
About on par with gun confiscation!! Americans are NOT going to just sit and accept this.
The states of Alabama, Idaho, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Utah and Virginia all own the liquor stores directly... In Pennsylvania, sales of alcoholic beverages were prohibited in convenience stores until 2017 when the laws changed. You can get wine and beer in grocery stores if they applied for a license.
Pa liquor stores are owned by the state....they get to make the call to close. In fact Pa was once a dry state. Now you can get booze at grocery stores who are licensed to sell.
So they haven’t extended tyrannical power they’ve actually done the opposite.
