Dr. Helen Y. Chu, an infectious disease expert in Seattle, knew that the United States did not have much time.
In late January, the first confirmed American case of the coronavirus had landed in her area. Critical questions needed answers: Had the man infected anyone else? Was the deadly virus already lurking in other communities and spreading?
As luck would have it, Dr. Chu had a way to monitor the region. For months, as part of a research project into the flu, she and a team of researchers had been collecting nasal swabs from residents experiencing symptoms throughout the Puget Sound region.
To repurpose the tests for monitoring the coronavirus, they would need the support of state and federal officials. But nearly everywhere Dr. Chu turned, officials repeatedly rejected the idea, interviews and emails show, even as weeks crawled by and outbreaks emerged in countries outside of China, where the infection began.

But those deaths will be attributed to the regular flu, heart attack, natural causes, ingrown toenail, etc. instead of CV.
Some Massachusetts health official said in a news briefing yesterday that people getting this more from symptomatic v asymptomatic carriers (only place I’ve heard of this to date). Even so, there several reports of symptomatic people not being tested due to rationing of scarce tests.
The data from South Korea and China is accurate enough to give us a good idea of where things are headed for us.
Recent history supports the theory that the death rate is on its way to well under 1%.
Only if the people actually go to the hospital.
This is the political flu. If the DNC can shed millions of emotionally retarded people, they think they have a shot.
And what about false positives?
I still don’t believe this thing is a big deal. I’m having huge dejavu here because this is what I said during Sars, ebola, and all the others. Every time there were people that said, “but this time it’s different”. Well, yeah, it’s different every time. But so far, in the US, even if you DO get it, as long as you are not over 80 and already sick, you’ll probably be fine. I mean, it may be like a bad case of the flu (or even less), but you’ll be fine.
Time will tell. :)
The CDC did screwed up the testing.
Trump was pressured into not micromanaging "the medical professionals".
Yes, ultimately it was his decision.
The CDC uses both real numbers and estimates. So the CDC does do a calculation using a estimated number for the number of people who never reported symptoms.
For example, the CDC's 0.1% death rate number for Influenza IS based on an estimate of the number of people who never reported symptoms. And I believe without that estimate, their calculated death rate for Influenza is 0.2%, or double the 0.1% rate.
Once you get it, you do not have immunity.
They probably died more in China because of triage practices.
You are a clown!
There were NOT 52K deaths from the flu. I read 18-21K. Trumps team (Fauci) is saying millions of Americans will be dying from This Coronavirus. The flu is not in the same league.
There were NOT 52K deaths from the flu. I read 18-21K.
There is a difference between the flu season and this year. The season started a few months before the end of the year. Those deaths were included in the number. We are both right.
