The first phase of the coronavirus outbreak was a domestic challenge for China and a border containment one for the United States and others. Now we are in the second phase: community mitigation. Math and history must guide our next steps.
The near-term objective should be to reduce the acute, exponential growth of the outbreak, in order to reduce suffering and the strain on our health-care system. That will require significant effort, but it can work, as we have seen: Hong Kong and Singapore have achieved linear growth of covid-19 cases, staving off the terrifying exponential upward curve confronting Italy and pushing both the infection rate down and new cases out on the timeline.

This will take care of the social security problem here in the US.
Medicare too.
Of course it’s not like the fedgov will use this windfall for anything but vote buying...
Just out of curiosity, what would the outcome be if the US let the contagion rip through the population? Infection and mortality rates similar to the common flu? Any death is tragic, but will the costs associated with fighting the disease out weigh letting the disease run its course. I am not advocating this, but just throwing it out for discussion.
You forgot to mention that Italy has gotten very cozy with China in recent years. Chinese investment in Italy, along with tourism (both ways) have increased significantly in recent years. Besides that, the notion that the Italian health care system is on par with the rest of Europe, much less the USA, is pure folly.
The hysteria will go away once warmer temperatures arrive and this virus fades for a bit, but the Democrats will no doubt hold hearings and talk 24/7 about Trumps response. And there will be plenty of never-Trump losers and panic pushers to help them. Not that he cant win against such crazies, but it will be a battle.
when H1N1 was declared a global emergency, Obama waited 4 months - during which time millions of Americans were infected and over 1,000 had died - we didnt all panic then but with a virus that has had 3 months to run rampant has hundreds of Americans infected and less than 20 dead...we go absolute bananas.
Obama declared H1N1 a public health emergency - the same level that Trump has declared - before any Americans died. He later declared it a national emergency to get by Medicare and other regs and expedite treatments.
Question you sources if you're hearing otherwise.
Declaring and taking positive actions to reduce ingress of the virus are different things...I stand by my comments.
H1N1 was first observed in humans pretty much simultaneously in the US and Mexico. The US did issue an advisory about travel to Mexico but it was already here.
The Sky is Falling, the Sky is falling... Oh nos....
With lower energy prices, it’s always a net positive for the US economy as a whole. The coronavirus-induced stock lowering (which in my opinion was partly a needed correction; way too many overvalued stocks) will be more robustly countered and we may see the stock market at a non-correction-needed 27 or 28 thousand by September or October, just in time for the final run up to the general election.

Somebody replied The Clintons should be quite high on that list.
How can I possibly be reading this? Haven’t I been killed yet by the terrible virus? I must be dreaming.

I know its not all women but the hysteria here
Wow
Yesterday you posted the Corona hockey stick.
Congratulations on furthering the panic with a very effective picture, lie though it may be.

I knew you'd be here with your over used stats, tale of woe, doom and gloom and the only thing that you've dropped from your repertoire is your often shared, Michael Mann, globull warming, hockey stick graph.
