The first phase of the coronavirus outbreak was a domestic challenge for China and a border containment one for the United States and others. Now we are in the second phase: community mitigation. Math and history must guide our next steps.
The near-term objective should be to reduce the acute, exponential growth of the outbreak, in order to reduce suffering and the strain on our health-care system. That will require significant effort, but it can work, as we have seen: Hong Kong and Singapore have achieved linear growth of covid-19 cases, staving off the terrifying exponential upward curve confronting Italy and pushing both the infection rate down and new cases out on the timeline.

Here is the up to the minute data

4089 deaths
Average age of the dead, 80 years old.
Freepers stop being part of the problem. Drop the drama queen hysteria and the shameless lying and put your grown up pants on finally

Sadly, a waste of electrons trying to get people here to NOT be part of the problem. Sometimes I login late at night, and it seems nearly every thread is about it...I guess it preys on people’s fears at that time.
That is just going to have to burn out like the virus eventually will.
Lawyers with Political Science degrees always make the best infectious disease experts.
It’s the WaPo.
Real news, science, and OK, virtually everything in real life is a mystery to these clowns. Remember, they went to college and NEVER had a course demanding intellect or reasoning. They are only journalists, which is no longer a respectable profession.
I’ll take my advice from my personal physician (who was a classmate in a college far more difficult than any a WaPo clown attended) and also from the many folks who actually know about this stuff.
Shove it, Wa Po. Shove it deep, and shove it often.
I wish you were right, but I fear you are in denial.
So, “It’s just the flu.”
(Like in Italy?)
FYI, Italian hospitals are in meltdown.
If you are over 65, or at any age if you have any co-morbid condition (diabetes, heart cond. etc), you are put outside the treatment triage. There simply are not enough staff or ICU beds or lung machines for all. You will not get into ICU, no oxygen intubation, you will just die. This is why Italys death rate is so high.
I think the USA will resemble Italy, not S. Korea or Taiwan, where they got way out in front of CV with massive early testing programs, early contract tracing, quarantine and social isolation EARLY.
In the USA, we missed those critical weeks and months of preparation.

From a well respected friend and intensivist/A&E consultant who is currently in northern Italy:
1/ I feel the pressure to give you a quick personal update about what is happening in Italy, and also give some quick direct advice about what you should do.
2/ First, Lumbardy is the most developed region in Italy and it has a extraordinary good healthcare, I have worked in Italy, UK and Aus and dont make the mistake to think that what is happening is happening in a 3rd world country.
3/ The current situation is difficult to imagine and numbers do not explain things at all. Our hospitals are overwhelmed by Covid-19, they are running 200% capacity
4/ Weve stopped all routine, all ORs have been converted to ITUs and they are now diverting or not treating all other emergencies like trauma or strokes. There are hundreds of pts with severe resp failure and many of them do not have access to anything above a reservoir mask.
5/ Patients above 65 or younger with comorbidities are not even assessed by ITU, I am not saying not tubed, Im saying not assessed and no ITU staff attends when they arrest. Staff are working as much as they can but they are starting to get sick and are emotionally overwhelmed.
6/ My friends call me in tears because they see people dying in front of them and they con only offer some oxygen. Ortho and pathologists are being given a leaflet and sent to see patients on NIV. PLEASE STOP, READ THIS AGAIN AND THINK.

PART ONE
PART TWO
Current policy seems to be no testing no virus.
OK Everybody!
On your mark.
Get Set.
PANIC!!!!!
Because of bureaucratic screw ups and protecting their fiefdom the US blow the month or more between the outbreak in Wuhan and the disease coming here. The CDC insisted on developing their own test and they proceeded to screw up. On top of that, the CDC insisted they would be the only body to test for COVID19. So while the South Koreans are testing 10,000 people a day, the US has tested less than 5,000 in total.
Will she take a semester off?

Would you care if he croaked? He is an old fart after all...
There's an 8% mortality rate in his age cohort.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
This is probably the Democrats’ last chance to beat Trump, so they have to milk it as long as possible.
Hear, hear! Go get your toilet paper and shelter in place.
Makes me wonder what the average age of freepers is. If it's 60 plus then I guess we are expendable.
Yep. Democraps gotta crap.
But Obama is happy now that his Chinese-made shovel ready jobs, (grave-diggers), are at last finally happening!
I hate to break it to the Dims, but the actual timing of this is likely to be more helpful to President Trump than the Democrats. It will be hard to keep the hysteria going through Spring and Summer as this thing dies down. With the billions of dollars thrown at it, there is likely to be some type of effective treatment developed and most likely some form of vaccine. With lower interest rates and lower fuel costs businesses will take off and the stock market will bounce back. Open borders will have proved to be a bad idea
