How do you even take a decades old rape charge to court? There’s no physical evidence from the time of the alleged assault. There were no reports made at the time of the alleged incident. This is he said/she said, with the corroboration that this friend of hers said she was there and it happened. Wanting to file charges after efforts to get some legal settlement payment stink to high heaven.
Not buying it.
Anyone can level an accusation like this.

Unfortunately, her mother worked in the film industry and fairly or unfairly mom believed she would not only lose her current job but also probably be unable to find work in the future!
That situation could and evidently did pose a real threat to loss of livelihood, being employed in a similar industry as Hutton (and I’m also assuming raising her daughter as a single woman.)
As awful as the situation was at the time, I’m hoping mom took her to the ER or at least the family physician to be examined after the event occurred, one presumes even that didn’t happen to protect this girl by her own mother, especially to determine if the 14 year old contracted a social disease.
Going on the presumption that a sex act of some kind did occur, at the age of 14, even if consensual, would have been criminal due to her young age, that she was too young to give consent and mother’s abdication of even minimal consideration of her daughter’s health and well-being was ignored, the 14 year old was wronged by both Hutton and her mother.
The most one could really hope for at this late date is an apology from Hutton and a sincere acknowledgement of just how neglectful this mother was to her own juvenile daughter.
Of course, it’s possible she’s telling the truth, but I take no stock in her telling 5 others about the event, or even that her friend who was with her says it’s true. 14 year old girls, especially in a group, often say outrageous lies, for juvenile reasons. If she hadn’t attempted to extort him over the years, she would be more credible. If it IS true, the mother, keeping it quiet to stay in “the business”, is a real scum bag.

That anyone takes such charges seriously, after 37 years, says more about them than anyone else.
I assume that that’s a reference to false accusations. Yes,people are falsely accused of wrongdoing...particularly when the accused is rich and/or famous.And after almost 40 years it will surely be difficult for either of them to prove their claims.

If my daughter had been raped, I would get justice first and then look for work in another field. I would want to get her far away from that environment.

But we do, when the accuser is a woman. You’re out of your house, you lose your w2a rights, probably your job, and its a well known tactic to loe about it when she wants custody - ie alimony 2 - from you.
It's possible that it happened and he honestly doesn't remember. He was pretty popular in the early 80s, and was probably getting a lot of action. If this was the sort of rape where he thinks they're having sex and she's utterly silent but screaming internally (and he doesn't know she's 14) it's definitely possible that they are both telling the truth as they remember it.

Also, one wonders how many under aged groupies are getting laid by lying about their ages? When I was about 19 I took out a girl who turned out to be 15, but in build and (especially) in experience was well beyond most of the 19 year old girls I knew. She was certainly more experienced than I.
One scenario: She lies about her age to get to see him and then is afraid to say no to sex because she would be embarrassed and chucked out. So, is it then rape if he doesn’t know she is a minor and as far as he knows she is a willing participant?
