A recent analysis of the 1918 epidemic, noted that cities where strict interventions were implemented early on to prevent transmission, were overall worse-off than cities where some degree of transmission occurred early on [16].

I thought we read an article (on one of latest CV threads) that said the opposite.

It compared the measures taken between Philly and St Louis...who both had first cases of 1918 epidemic about the same time....

Philly continued on with public gatherings, school openings, etc., while SL stopped all public gatherings, closed schools. The difference in deaths, betweet Ph and SL were about half (Philly having twice as many deaths, than SL).

The measures taken, by SL, were attributed to a doctor who also headed up their health department.

I got this via FRmail.

VERY interesting post. VERY.

You will stop wondering if the CDC dropped the ball and begin to think they threw the ball away into the weeds deliberately...

If I were the governor I would shut down the whole state, close everything but essential services. Wouldn’t be popular, but who cares.

And how do you enforce? Any such action is only as good as the willingness of people to abide by such actions.

How about just pouring alcohol on your hands and using aloe when you wish.

“In general, evidence shows that restricting the movement of people and goods during public health emergencies is ineffective in most situations and may divert resources from other interventions.”

They’re still in “Ebola Mode”, with the thought being that if you spray a bit of bleach, wear an N95, and do a few other things, you’ll never get the bug.

In the case of Ebola, a big ‘problem’ for the countries that had it bad (all in West Africa) was that a lot of Westerners simply didn’t want to take the risk of going there to help them...so they probably suffered more than otherwise necessary. But, of course, it took bodily fluid transmission to spread...and that is reasonably easy to avoid.

Now the TWHO (Third World Health Organization) is more interested in preventing that outcome (infected countries not getting help), than containing the spread. The problem, this time, is that Coronavirus spreads via aerosol transmission, and if you get enough exposure to it, you WILL get the disease. And if you go into a high-concentration zone for any length of time, like the Love Boat, you will get the disease. And if the concentration of the virus in the air is high enough, it will get past anything short of those military positive pressure suits...you WILL otherwise get it.

As I said a month ago, they’re still fighting the last war...and nothing seems to have changed regarding that.

"and that is reasonably easy to avoid."

Donning and doffing PPE is easy *if practiced often*. There were many cases of Ebola being transmitted during the doffing process. Removing gloves without coming in contact with the glove exterior takes constant vigilance.

Every time my family has someone in the Hospital, we keep a family member there 24 hours/day. Surprising how many people come and go through the course of 24 hours. I always make sure hands are always washed.

Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that, in the cities that saw double-peaked autumn epidemics, control measures may have been, if anything, too effective, stopping transmission so effectively that substantial numbers of susceptible individuals remained in the population when controls were lifted. This remaining susceptible pool allowed transmission to restart, leading to another epidemic peak and (in some cases) to the resumption of interventions. Conversely, cities in which transmission had been continuing for longer before interventions were introduced saw much smaller or no second epidemic peaks, because insufficient susceptible people remained to restart transmission. The theory of imperfect interventions tells us there is an optimal middle ground, i.e., interventions tuned to give a single peak of minimal size.

We don’t need n-95 masks.

Stay away from coughs, sneezes and hiccups and don't shake hands or have sex with an infected person. And by all means, stay away from white man's medicine and destroy his clinics.

I read somewhere today that China thinks that the previous SARS Vaccination given to people in Wuhan might be the reason for the high death count. I wonder if there is some truth to that. It caused their immune systems to go into hyper drive?

I’d just come out of surgery and the iv needed to be redone. The nurse, thinking I was zonked out and no one was around, dropped everything on the floor including the uncovered needle. She just stuck the needle back in. I was aware enough to notice and panicked but unable raise an alarm. Too many times with shoddy care.

That’s what China has been admitting to for a month. It takes a lot for China to admit something as serious at this so likely true.

Video of Oregon rideshare driver -

“Lane Jensen can be found picking up passengers in the metro area six days a week. The driver said he’s taking disinfecting wipes and wiping down his car after every ride. He said that since his car is his office, it’s important to keep it sanitized.

“I’ve got Lysol wipes, I got paper towels, and I got sanitizing spray right here,” said Jensen. “I don’t want to catch it. I don’t want any of my passengers to catch it.”

Wow Jax has changed .
An Asian population now.
I think its a what you suspect.
Ebay speculators who hope to rip off which is usually Asians or Russian too .
Lots of Russians in N calif . Spring breakers not stopped here either .

Unemployment in St. Johns County (St. Augustine) is 2.2% now. Jax/Duval is 2.9%. Asians, Hispanics and everybody else are migrating here to fill jobs. The old time area of west Jax, home to Lynyrd Skynyrd, is fast being Hispanized. In a decade it will look no different than much of Orlando.

I remember being at a garage sale in SF right after the first big wave of post Soviet Russians arrived. Being hustlers they hit the garage sale circuit hard. Somebody was asking a couple bucks for a pair of jeans and a Russian said “how about 10 cents?” I learned something there about Russians from that. Ha ha.
