Last Tuesday(?) the CDC widened it to patients with severe respiratory distress with no obvious cause - travel was not included. That is why they tested the man in Washington on Thursday, and who has since died. The man had other chronic health issues that complicated treatment.
So it isn't a case of more people have the virus, just more people are being tested for it. I imagine that in the next week there will be a huge spike in the numbers. Washington state just became able to test in-house, rather than sending it to the CDC, so that will also factor into more people getting tested.

I don’t comprehend all of “risk management” - but it can evolve over time. Say with regard to wearing a mask. A healthcare provider during “normal” times probably rarely wears masks. During flu season I’m guessing a few of them do? I imagine at these facilities with known outbreaks that many of them will be wearing masks all the time at work now?
But same with the tests. You couldn’t test every one with a fever without some other “probable cause” such as travel to China. But I imagine that now anybody with 1 or 2 symptoms that shows up at any of the hospitals in this area of Washington state will get tested for the virus so they can try to track it down, find others that may have been infected, etc. so they can try to reduce the spread of it.
And, if it gets really bad and the virus is widespread, I’m guessing then the tests won’t really matter anymore and they won’t be done except in special instances.
I agree with Dr. Drew. This Coronavirus hysteria is over the top. The virus is dominating the news. Of course, the left are hoping that the hysteria over the virus will hurt Trump.
I’m more interested in what is occurring in Syria between Russia and Turkey. Most Americans aren’t aware of that skirmish because of the non-stop coverage of the Coronavirus.
my guess is, they didnt have the testing to detect it until recently, and has been spreading worldwide for a while. Probably just seems like a cold to most people.

Can’t fully sign on either, but it’s a logical possibility.
It’s actually been out there closer to 3 months and it’s more surprising that it hasn’t blown up a lot bigger if one listens to all the stories designed to panic us.

First acknowledged sample sequenced for viral identification, was taken 24 December 2019 from an infected patient admitted to the Hospital of Wuhan 18 Dec. 2019. Reports of an uptick in pneumonia patients preceded this date for the province in which Wuhan is located.
