I've been a software engineer since 1980. If you're competent, there is endless work and long hours ahead. In the past 6 months, my work weeks have been a minimum of 60 hours and a few as high as 78 hours. Salaried. Paid for 40 hours a week. I tolerate it because I can work from my home office. No commute. No extra expenses for "office clothes". Meeting via Skype. Connectivity via VPNs. Depending on the project, I range from a solo software designer/implementer/tester to being an engineering manager with 25 engineers working for me. It's not a line of work for the lazy or careless. Deliver a good product and you'll have people angling for you services. Screw off and you'll hit the bricks fast.

Well, that knocks out the vast majority of government employees.
I guess theyll just have to keep crying in the hallways, instead of doing their jobs.
