Spit nails. Yes. You could nail a lot of crosses quickly that way.

I read somewhere that a US soldier in SK got it. Then have not seen it mentioned afterward. Was the first announced US military case. At least I thought the blurb said that.

WHO Briefing down and dirty non-transcript

Tedros: virus is not influenza, fever and dry cough, not sniffles are main symptoms. Doesn’t appear to be widespread community transmission: 0.14% out of over 320K tested in Guangdong were positive.
review of numbers, 7 countries reporting for the first time, Brazil, Georgia, N. Macedonia, Pakistan, Greece, Norway, Romania - advice is to move swiftly to contain. some countries free for 2 weeks now have reported cases (Sweden, finland) more new cases outside of China than inside,
main focus - are you ready? do you have this, that and the other in place? Virus does not respect borders, races or ethnicities or level of development. But we’re not defenseless. Isolate, trace, care, hospital and community transmission. Aggressive containment and prepare for multiple scenarios. Online courses in multiple languages by WHO. Take action now to save lives now.

then into question session
Olympics - working with Japan re: risk assessment - no decision at this time - trying to preserve - applies to all mass gatherings, work, sports, business, religious

south America tropical conditions what does that mean for the virus with Brazil local health system already in trouble? risk management fluff answer - can’t make assumptions on spread of virus depending on environment

factors to explain Iran? only see severe end of the spectrum. more fluff. Iran may have more cases in milder range

US - community spread - go back to what Tedros said - US well traced, no evidence of community spread or clusters

vaccine question from Guana - WHO concerned re: Africa - invest as much as possible to get ready, want African countries to respond in a coordinated fashion = training 80K want to train more and provide PPE supplies. Africa used to epidemics.

have diagnostics changed? lack of access to testing including the US? we evolve case definitions - new guidance on diagnostic criteria will be issued today, Best way is still to test

What does it mean that more cases outside china being a decisive point? good for China, increase elsewhere bad news. Go from individual, to clusters, to community, to widespread based on how we handle it and that’s why it’s decisive. Do everything to contain, window of opportunity.

what does the test cost and what about shortage of masks? is it overly simple to say treat it as flu? test different prices per mfg, $5ea for WHO test. N95 masks needed for medical people -tap national strategic stockpiles in larger countries to supply smaller countries. Yes, give same advice as flu for handwashing, social distancing, taking care of self.

should wear masks? earloops - wear if you are sick don’t wear if you aren’t. WHO online videos show how to wear mask. If shortage of masks should go to medical and then to people taking care of others at home. Other countries masks are a cultural norm so have to be careful telling ppl not to wear a mask

asymptomatic people? not the driving force or major factor behind this epidemic - most cases are from symptomatic individuals

shortages of conventional drugs? issues on supply chains, but many are “switching back on again” and seeing pressure ease

full transcript will be published by WHO tomorrow

So he is relying on Chicom numbers to say community transmission rate low. Commies and Marxist are just plain mass murdering killers. Never ever let them into positions of power.

0.14% out of over 320K tested in Guangdong were positive.

so the Chinese tested 320,000 people in one Province? I think at its max there were “only” 150,000 or so close contacts being watched in the entire country...

And why isn’t China blasting the hell out of every bat cave with massive amounts of whatever you kill bats with instead of running around beating people who cant afford masks, for not having a mask?

Bats and bees a critical pollinators. Bats also eat massive amounts of insects reducing the need for pesticides. Killing bats is a mindless act that has large impacts on food supplies.

People are gonna scream that Ambassador Birx is an Obama appointee...

Otherwise, tho’, she looks to be well qualified. Might well become the primary spokesperson?

I read up on CDC Director Redfield, too. Impressive resume, but also sounds like he might be a little bullheaded about changing direction when need be. He certainly took a heck of a pay cut, as did some of his superiors, to take a position in the Trump Administration.

Actually it was his partner or someone off base I think that gave it to him. My impression. Story may have been spiked or perhaps a false positive. Who knows.

darlin’ they got bats that we know from 2013 are carrying sars and sars variants. The Chinese are giving tours in these caves where the bats poo on them. Entry isn’t controlled in other caves that ‘eco-idiots’ think are ok to explore because nobody put up a sign.

Eradicate them or it won’t matter if they’re pollinators because there will be no humans left to eat what is pollinated. Then they can import some nice friendly disease free bats or beesd or butterflies, but get rid of the disease cauldrons.

We have such supplies because, our luck, things break Saturday night or Sunday afternoon.

I had a leak start under the kitchen sink at 3 AM in the morning on Christmas Eve. First thing in the morning, I went to Lowe's and spent $200 on plumbing parts to do the repair as I didn't want to call a plumber. It was -7F ambient, 15 MPH wind. I fixed it in time to prevent any damage.

speaking of false positives, I watched an interview with one of the Westerdam ppl, and the lady said that the woman that tested positive twice in Kalua Lampur tested negative third time so the cruisers were allowed to return home. CDC stated that the passenger ‘never had’ CV.

here’s a story:

Well...they can always learn to code.

I've been a software engineer since 1980. If you're competent, there is endless work and long hours ahead. In the past 6 months, my work weeks have been a minimum of 60 hours and a few as high as 78 hours. Salaried. Paid for 40 hours a week. I tolerate it because I can work from my home office. No commute. No extra expenses for "office clothes". Meeting via Skype. Connectivity via VPNs. Depending on the project, I range from a solo software designer/implementer/tester to being an engineering manager with 25 engineers working for me. It's not a line of work for the lazy or careless. Deliver a good product and you'll have people angling for you services. Screw off and you'll hit the bricks fast.
