“Wow Japans Prime Minister is requesting that all elementary schools, junior high & high schools nationwide close starting next Monday until spring break”
That’s basically a month. Wouldn’t be a big deal here, since kids learn nothing at public schools anyway (other than to hate America), but it is in Japan, we’re they’re still being taught something.
“FREEPERS have been posting about this for way longer than that. And IIRC, POTUS over a year ago, was telling people to find other suppliers outside of China.”
But it was hypothetical until the Chinese New Year...in that China was about as reliable a supplier as we could ask for (certainly more reliable than any union-infested American operation). But with the shutdown continuing past the Chinese New Year, then it became REAL - and that’s when a fair number of us sounded the alarm - simply because the ships in China were not being loaded anymore. In other words, there was a storm heading towards us, and all of the happy talk, look-back analyses, debunking of prior false alarms, everything - it meant nothing this time. The ships were not being loaded.
As to Trump saying that we need to disengage from China - that’s only part of the problem. So we go to Vietnam, or even Mexico or Canada, for example - and where do they get their source materials from, in many cases? One guess, and this is going to bite us on most of imports and even domestic production. This assessment should have been going on for years, or at least starting Jan 23 this year (when all hell broke loose in China), but only THIS WEEK are large companies (Proctor and Gramble, Coke, and now Microsoft) started to own up to their exposure (and still not a peep from drug companies...only more happy talk). They lost a critical month when they could have been lobbying Trump to declare an emergency and get some relief from regulations (and unions) so they could start up production here. It would have helped, at least somewhat.

Implementing patient specific surveillance for #covid19 as part of our tracking of influenza like illness is going to be a key step for enabling early detection and mitigation of outbreaks.
A lot of band aids on this sucker.
It's now the 27th, or 25 days minimum after the ban on Chinese nationals. Unless there are a whole bunch of asymptomatic carriers, which would mean a whole bunch of cases popping up, I don't think we need to look at those 20K.
So that leaves three groups:
Chinese married to US citizens that were allowed in after the 5th,
Chinese who 'beat the system' by staying in Singapore or Japan or Dubai, etc., until the 14 days from mainland china restrictions were expired, and then flew into the US.
Or, travelers from other than China flying into the US before we added their countries to the list of countries requiring enhanced screening (Taiwan, Singapore, hong kong, Japan, etc).
Customs and BP need to run their databases and locate these folks' destinations within the US
p.s, I agree completely that you don't want your neighbors to know you're preparing or that you have provisions. Not that one's neighbors might be a threat, but they tell someone, who tells someone who tells someone...
in America, schools are often the babysitter while both parents work.
If schools close, single parents and households that need 2 parents working will be in a pickle. Both will either have to take paid family leave, if they have that, or face unemployment, devastating for single parents.
We agreed to take in one person as she saved my wife’s life once. Other than that, I’ve only talked to one fellow prepper at work. Neighbors-nothing although they (and especially delivery men) may know that I’m up to something, with delivery trucks (UPS/Fedex types) stopping at my house daily (often more than once) for the past month, so I worry a bit there, but hopefully they don’t pick up on it.

No doubt similar in Japan (plus the kids there actually learn math and learn to read)...it is a huge deal to shut them down in either country.
Yeah, but if they had listened to Dr. Gottlieb from day 1, wed be testing and screening like Singapore is. With Duke technology no less.

Scott Pauley, a spokesperson for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, declined to tell The Associated Press where the other cruise ship passengers were taken, apart from Spokane.
Spokane County Health Officer Dr. Bob Lutz said the patients were transported to the Spokane International Airport from Travis Air Force Base near Sacramento, California.
One pair arrived before noon on Thursday, while the others arrived shortly before 4 p.m. Hospital staff said the patients are in satisfactory condition as of Friday morning....The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which selected Sacred Heart, originally notified the hospital on Wednesday that it would receive five patients but the number dropped to four later that night, health officials said on Thursday.
Please tell me I am crazy. I am NOT normally a conspiracy nut.
You would have to see if the timeline fits as this person was tested very late:

Pope Francis has missed a planned Mass with clergy in Rome due to an unspecified illness. The Vatican said the pontiff, 83, had a slight indisposition and would proceed with the rest of his planned work today but preferred to stay near Santa Marta, the Vatican hotel where he lives. There was no word from the Vatican about the nature of his illness, but the pope was seen coughing and blowing his nose during the Ash Wednesday Mass.

I would have preferred seeing him resign, considering all the damage he’s done.

I found at least a somewhat plausible reason that the CDC might not have tested. It seems we have NL63 floating about:
This case was diagnosed Dec 23:

Coronavirus in Veneto, hospitals under pressure: more infections among doctors
Another cluster grows in Treviso. Zaia orders another 200 permanent hires for the emergency
VENICE The two Coronavirus outbreaks of Veneto and Lombardy are connected. “It is an already established hypothesis,” said WHO’s Walter Ricciardi, who sent his officials to the two most affected Italian regions. Meanwhile, while the Veneto health system is reorganizing itself to better face the emergency, trying to protect its operators as much as possible, we learn that there is a new white coat infected in Padua. He is an intern from the hospital, a university student, tested positive for the swab and now hospitalized for infectives.
