LA Times Film Critic: Trump Saying He Likes ‘Gone with the Wind’ Is a ‘Racist Dog Whistle’
Breitbart ^ | 2/21/20 | Pam Key

Posted on 02/22/2020 12:23:28 AM PST by david1292

Los Angeles Times film critic Justin Chang said Friday on CNN that President Donald Trump mentioning the movie “Gone With the Wind” at his rally was a “racist dog whistle.”

Chang said, “It’s kind of unfortunate, I think, that we have a president whose entire presidency is founded on xenophobia and of course his comments are not surprising coming from someone who likes to dehumanize people of other cultures and people of color. So none of that’s surprising.”

He continued, “Well, that whole thing, “Gone with the Wind” and “Sunset Boulevard,” that all smacks of a dog whistle hearkening back to an earlier era of Hollywood greatness. Look, we can love “Gone with the Wind,” and also acknowledge it’s the romantic view of the old South, which many people find problematic. That is another racist dog whistle as well.”

He added, “I think it’s real laziness on his part. He is just someone who is very lazy. I think to say that. You know, a lot of people say this, there are no movies being made in the present today that are as good as the classics that were made 50 or 60 years ago. And it’s totally fine that Trump is, you know, out of touch with popular culture. You know, he has or should have better things to do like running the country, but he really should think twice about speaking about things of which he is so woefully ignorant.”

the only reason “Parasite” was chosen Best Picture was because of all the attacks over lack of diversity:

People who call Gone With the Wind racist are both racist themselves, and ignorant.

GWTW was one of my favorite films and books for decades too. I wanted to BE Rhett Butler.

But as I got older and perhaps wiser, and my values changed; I analyzed the story differently, and came to the conclusion that Margaret Mitchell wrote the story about five really decent people: Mrs Ellen O’Hara, Melanie Wilkes, Mammie, Pork and Big Sam. Three of the five people who were completely decent people were ‘blacks’. Everyone else was some combination to some degree of foolish, dishonest, immoral, spoiled, airheaded, snobbish, narcissistic, arrogant etc.

Oh a few of them might be fun to have a drink with, but those five named above are the only ones that I’d have much respect for and want to be friends with.

You are forgetting that we are dealing with people here who think we need to tear down our statues and monuments and artwork because they were made in racist eras.

These people hate our history. And destroying it is their way of reconciling with it.

today’s “movies” are videos with heavy computer assistance whether it is green-screened backgrounds, sets, and crowds, animation that as formerly done by human hands (cel or stop motion), editing, and all of the “instagram” filtering to make it look like anything BUT video.

"Basically he's saying if you like the classic movies and think they are better than today's movies, it means you are racist since you are rejecting the forced diversity of Hollywood today."

Nah what he's really saying is, because of his attitude and his lack of worthy work skills, he'd have been a coolie at best on the set of GWTW.

Including “white men” such as GW Carver who created whole lines of chemical processes with the peanut and tobacco. A lot of other white men made a lot of money off the research Carver did.

Then we have “white man Garret Morgan” who invented the modern 3 position traffic light and the modern gas mask.

Sure white men did a lot but so did those other “white men”.

We need to give credit where credit is due. Otis a white man invented the elevator but Alexander Miles another “white man” modernized the design including the use of automatic opening and closing of the doors including the closing of the outer shaft doors as the elevator inner doors would shut.

Got a pacemaker? It’s modern control unit was developed by an other “white man”.

The fact is, in terms of modern inventions that have made our lives easier, the inventors themselves are almost their own race, regardless of “skin color”. The contributions are so intertwined that the various inventions and counter inventions that depend on previous discoveries can’t be separated out by the race of any particular inventor.

I think I’ll watch a Charlie Chan movie later..................... I was thinking the same thing. Fine acting by those famous Chinese (???? LOL) actors Sidney Toler and Warner Oland. My favorite Asian actor was Richard Loo, who made a career out of WW II. (Hey, it rhymed.) He was always playing that evil Japanese Officer you loved to hate.

I know I shouldn't wonder but the gap between the reality and the accusation is so large it's bewildering how this belief gets started, distributed and closely held.

Even if I detested Trump I would have to admit that most of his time in office has been spent on the business side of things. The rest, unfortunately, has been spent on pathetic little ankle biters in DC trying to trip him up.

Trump isn't an ideologue. He is an independent (small i) who didn't so much gravitate to the GOP, he made the GOP gravitate to him.

Someone inherently racist or xenophobic would be making speeches couched in elliptical references. Someone inherently racist or xenophobic wouldn't care about black and Latino employment.

It seems Chang is like many in that he believes having a proper border with proper enforcement is somehow an ethnic issue.

Yeah, it's really strange why they get so upset about these old movies. I mean, even back then, they were putting Asian guys in leading roles

The LA Times actually published this piece of garbage in their newspaper? No surprise MaClatchey and other newspapers are going bankrupt. The quicker these low lives went out of business, the better for mankind it's going to be.
