People who call Gone With the Wind racist are both racist themselves, and ignorant.
GWTW was one of my favorite films and books for decades too. I wanted to BE Rhett Butler.
But as I got older and perhaps wiser, and my values changed; I analyzed the story differently, and came to the conclusion that Margaret Mitchell wrote the story about five really decent people: Mrs Ellen O’Hara, Melanie Wilkes, Mammie, Pork and Big Sam. Three of the five people who were completely decent people were ‘blacks’. Everyone else was some combination to some degree of foolish, dishonest, immoral, spoiled, airheaded, snobbish, narcissistic, arrogant etc.
Oh a few of them might be fun to have a drink with, but those five named above are the only ones that I’d have much respect for and want to be friends with.
That is a spot on analysis! Good job.
Your analysis is really insightful. I have never thought of that before, but it is so true.
