And whether it’s a cruise or just eating out locally - the table top and menu are none too clean. During flu season, I carry sanitizing wipes with me in my bag. After the waitstaff pick up the menus, I use the wipe to clean my hands and then wipe down the table top in front of me. Just a small precaution.

We do that all the time, not just during flu season.
I never bothered before, but now I am a convert of hand sanitization. In stores, now I wipe handles of the cart with anti-bacterial.
But still best defense against any virus is keeping your resistance as good as possible. The world is full of germs, bacteria and viruses. Our bodies fight them everyday.
It is not too bad to touch anything, menus, table tops etc. if you then do not touch your eye or nose or mouth with that hand. Your skin on the hand is pretty tough and germs can not penetrate it, but if you touch any wet area, bam, the germs are inside your body.
