At least one historian of the war has stated the fire bombings of the German cities were unnecessary and were carried out at the insistence of a particular British officer who had a rather maniacal desire to destroy the German people.
I would accept it as justified if it definitely shortened that war.
Heard similar reports, but the responsible person was named Winston.
I read accounts and seen the documentaries. They mostly point to that british commander who gave specific orders to bomb the st@t out the enemy. But I won’t pretend that I care. War is hell.
Dresden, which was payback for the bombing of London, did not have an impact on the time frame of the war.
That would be Bomber Harris. On the other hand, a leading NAZI, (Goebbels?) said that after the first mass bombing of a German city, Hamburg, the German people would quit if 10 more such incidents occurred.
Ah yes, another military expert chimes in (in hindsight).
At that time the war was effectively over, the action was arguably worse than any bombing the Germans did in their bombings of London in it's scope and accuracy, the Luftwaffe was a bare skeleton. There can be no comparison to the bombing of Hiroshima or Nagasaki as far as needing to pacify a citizenship willing to fight to the last man, woman and child. There was no such attitude among the German people as a whole who were tired of a war that had drug on under the leadership of a patently insane Hitler.
Your referring to Bomber Harris.
Yeah, he wasn’t a fan of London being bombed every night. The Germans brought Dresden on itself. When the Russians invaded Germany, they raped everyone they could.
None of this, of course, against the backdrop of slaughtering all of those Jews. I couldn’t stand that Vonnegut novel.
It was through a roughing penalty flag on the guy who hit the guy back who started it.
