long ago my flip phone died like you describe - had something to do with the hinge/flip wear and tear, IIRC

Yep. The flexible ribbon cable gets old and cracks with the flexing and the conductors inside start to break slowly sometimes causing strange symptoms when they get down to that last strand or two.

Time to upgrade!
