As a tribute to Rush, I am asking his fans to remember their favorite update theme songs. He mostly stopped the use of these during the Bush43 and Obama years due to music royalty issues but here were some of my favorites:
Feminist Update I - "Born A Woman" - Sandy Posey (that's hurt, not heard)
Feminist Update II - "Men" - The Forrestall Sisters
Peace Update - "Una Paloma Blanca" - Slim Whitman
Environmentalist Whacko Update - "Born Free" - Andy Williams (accompanied by assorted sound effects)
Condom Update - "Up, Up and Away" - The 5th Dimension
Gay Update - "You Don't Own Me" - Klaus Nomi
Timber Update - "?" (rock instrumental with chainsaws doing the part of electric guitars)
Gov. (Mario) Cuomo Update - "I Put A Spell On You" - Screamin' Jay Hawkins
I'm sure I am leaving some out. Then there was the Paul Shanklin creations which were wonderful but were song parodies, not the actual songs.
Years ago, Rush was asked in an interview if he had ever done a gag that he thought even he had gone too far. He said yes. He briefly has an AIDS Update theme of Dionne Warwick singing "I know I'll Never Love This Way Again". Brilliant but, yeah, a little too cruel.
What were your favorites? What did I leave out?
Carol Mosely Braun’s - Movin’ on up.
I dont remember, my brains in a blender, its Jell-O.
didn’t Clearance “Frogman” Henry call in once or pass along word he listened to the show?
Ted Kennedy The Wanderer
I seem to remember “My Boy Lollipop” as a homo update.
“didnt Clearance Frogman Henry call in once or pass along word he listened to the show?”
Yea, he LOVED Rush, for giving his career a second wind. Also my favorite update, of course.
In a Yugo.
Al Gore-I’ve Got Friends in Low Places.
I don’t get AM Radio now without a lot of widgeting, or fiddling with Bluetooth, so I just do without.
Question: Is Paul Shanklin still contributing song parodies?
I used to hear a lot of his work some five or six years ago.
Very well done, almost all of the time.
I always thought there should be more RUSH music.
Feminist Update #1 should be “You Don’t Own Me” (Leslie Gore)
The same song was also used for a “Gay COmmunity Update”, both the “Blow Monkeys” version, as well as Klaus Nomi’s version. ANother Update Theme was “When I Say No, I mean Maybe (or Maybe I mean Yes).

He’s still singing and will be at New Orleans Jazzfest this year:

Paul Shanklin doing Hillary’s “I don’t recall” from the Fantasticks is classic, but my favorite is Una Paloma Blanca, especially when Slim yodels “No one can take, my freedom away”.
Rush would chime in with, “Oh yes, they can!!!”
(This was before the fall of the USSR)
Prayers for Rush, every day.
“The Whitewater Blues...”
I always got a thrill when it was time to rag on Gorbachev with the John Williams’ Darth Vader march.
My favorite update was the Leslie Gore “You Don’t Own Me” followed by Frogman’s “Ain’t Got No Home”.
