A map? He knew there were hills, that is why he had 'stopped' for all intents and purposes. BTW, the freezing level was 7500+ ft, at any time during this flight the pilot could have went 'inadvertent entry to IMC', pulled power and been in the clouds for less than 20 secs before ending up in the clear above the cloud/fog/smog deck. Kobe didn't have to die.
