That seems backward. Viruses usually survive best on hard surfaces, esp. cool or cold hard surfaces. They do poorly on substances like paper or tissue.

Typical bureaucracy running into a difficult-at-best situation they should have anticipated, but did not, with typical CYA thrown in for good measure to compound the mess...

I agree with the 1st part of that: Complaining about the cost of care or monitoring of cases or suspect cases of this novel coronavirus is very foolish. Our best shot at learning more about this disease may come from those people.

Penny-wise, pound foolish.

I also at this point agree re: our President, and it’s not time to panic. I just hope he has the right people getting the information to him. (I know Ben Carson is off over at HUD, and is not an infectious disease expert, but he IS a brilliant health professional, with a great deal of common sense...)

Where I may differ with you a bit is regarding health care in Wuhan. Much of it is a relatively modern city, and from what I can gather, under normal circumstances “basic health care” there is not so bad. The problem is, the epidemic ramped up fast, way too fast for the bureaucracy to keep up (typical incompetence), and now the system is overwhelmed.

Would we do better, in, say, LA? I don’t know. I think we could slow the rate of spread, but stop it? I doubt it.

Here in the mid-South USA, my wife teaches, and my daughter is in Middle School, and it’s not that unusual for them to bring home bugs. It’s not at all unusual at some point during the cold / flu season for up to 10% or more of the kids and staff to be out, and it’s not unusual for one or more area schools to shut down for a few days due to one or another outbreak. I don’t think we’re all that “primitive”...

Clarify for me Bill; I seem to remember reading yesterday that there is a protein "spike" on the surface of the cell; and that this spike allows the virus to attack deep in the lungs, not just the upper airway.

Is that what you are referring to?

I have a regular cold, so I'm out of it. I MIGHT BE WRONG HERE

Secondly -- I understand they have done the full genetic sequencing of this virus. Has anyone compared the full genetic sequence, to the claims from that anonymous bulletin board posting (the one with the dark and light green striped background) alleging with some specificity, that this was genetically engineered, to see if the claims given in the posting, match known sequences of the virus, *or*, are close enough, that it might be a reasonable layman's mistake?

China does not control the Panama Canal. Their company Hutchison Whampoa (sp?) controls the container ports at both ends, for ships too large to pass through the canal which offload their containers for a rail trip across the isthmus to another ship on the other side. Panamanians run the actual canal operations.

But if there is a breakout of CV in the canal zone, naturally operations could be affected, like they would be in any port that was similarly afflicted.

I highly recommend this video by Felix Rex, the new alias for the brilliant Black Pigeon Speaks:

How a Pandemic could END CIVILIZATION

This article is confusing, so they are saying that the suspected cases tested positive for flu but had more symptoms?

***First human to human transmission in Europe

Coronavirus in Germany

Infected persons had contact with 40 other people - including children

Sven Lemkemeyer Ingo Salmen Julia Bernewasser Oliver Bilger Benjamin Reuter

A German was infected by a colleague who was visiting from China. No other diseases are known in his environment. The news blog.

The first coronavirus patient in Germany is in good clinical condition. This was announced by the “Task Force Infectiology” of the State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL). “He is medically monitored and is isolated.”

It is a 33-year-old man from the district of Starnberg in Bavaria , said a spokesman for the Bavarian Health Department. He had infected the man in Germany with a Chinese colleague who had been visiting Germany. Both work for the Bavarian automotive supplier Webasto, which is headquartered near Munich. The man and the Chinese woman had close contact with 40 other people in Germany.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, it is the first time that the coronavirus has been transmitted outside of Asia . So far, there has only been one case of infection outside of China: In Vietnam, a patient has contracted another patient.

If you ever shipped something to China and it did not arrive as expected, their outrage is common. The Chinese culture is not docile.

Great. My son is in Germany for the month on temp duty.

My daughter is concerned they won’t be able to get back.

So with your scientific background..what does that mean as it relates to the China Bar/Sars Chapel Hill virus.

Does it rule it out? Or leave the door open?

Rules it out.

This is something completely different.

Literally unmatched in the genomic database. (that’s publically available)

It remains to be seen whether this ‘modification’ is a natural one with widespread infectious potential or if there is a decided racial skew in the mortality/morbidity. CCP and PLA would gladly sacrifice 75M of their own people and (temporarily) crash their economy if they could simultaneously get rid of 90% of non Han on the planet.

“if there is a decided racial skew in the mortality/morbidity.”

Is this just your idea or is there something he said that is having him ask the same question

Some of us here are looking to see the racial component. As one person pointed out a few days ago we haven’t heard of caucasians getting it yet...which really means nothing at this point but should be watched.

I started the spreadsheet.

Thanks, D1.

Something tells me YOUR spreadsheet will be MUCH more informative and organized than mine would be.

Will you be posting it, or a link, periodically?

The cases in Germany may be caucasians.

The lady they got it from is still asymptomatic.

It’s something that’s my idea. I worked with many Han over the years. Han supremacy is a real thing. PLA calls biowarfare with genome specific pathogens ‘bloodless victory’.

Guaranteed that chicom working in the canadian national lab was working on something ...just what is the question.

THIS is why I’ve always complained about EVERYONE getting the 23andME testing done. You KNOW all that genomic data is in chicom hands. Just like all OTHER data they might need for anything else as well. Once they have a wide enough data set of ‘european descent’ people it’s trivial to look for ethnic/racial specific mutations that either protect or make susceptible.

Let’s hope that isn’t the case this time.
