A girls’ basketball coach was identified as one of the fatalities in the crash that killed Kobe Bryant and his daughter Sunday, officials said.

Christina Mauser — who worked at a private school in Orange County, California — was among nine people killed instantly when their helicopter crashed in Calabasas, according to Costa Mesa Mayor Katrina Foley.

“My kids and I are devastated,” Christina’s husband, Matt Mauser, wrote on Facebook.

“We lost our beautiful wife and mom today in a helicopter crash. Please respect our privacy. Thank you for all the well wishes they mean so much.”

Also killed in the crash along with Bryant, 41, and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, were college baseball coach John Altobelli, his daughter Alyssa Altobelli

Pilot had an accent.

You mean like a California accent? He was Armenian-Anerican. Many Armenians in CA.

Exactly the type of person you want as chief pilot.

Agree. When Diana died in that car crash, I said to my husband ‘I realize that people die in accidents, but not people like her’. Of course anybody can die in an accident, but when it is someone that has been in so many people’s living rooms via TV, it is still a shock.

Sad for his family. A Dad, a Husband, a Son, a Daughter and a Sister.

exactly. Almost all of these types of accidents are pilot error and poor judgement. If the LAPD grounded helicopter flights due to the fog, then they should not have been flying.

So why did they give them special clearance?

I hope it wasn't because the pilot possibly mentioned that Kobe Bryant was on board and they were late to his daughter's basketball tournament. That might put a little more pressure on an air traffic controller. My feeling (as a layman) is they shouldn't have been flying, period. Forfeit the game but keep your precious lives.

Especially when young. 9 people in that flight. Not all famous. But all loved.

According to former pilot, Dietz, who flew that helicopter, Island Express had excellent maintenance record. He said it must have been weather related.

Dad work for Sikorsky’s for 40 years. Works on the first commercial helicopter, believe it was the S-39. He never flew in one just didn’t feel safe. He was right. Also Igor thought that helicopters would be safety vehicle to help and rescue people.
When a helicopter loses power, it falls like a rock which this one did. Not pilot error, mechanical error.

Car would have worked. Understand they were going to T.O., which is a 20 min. drive.

When well known folks are involved in tragedies the ordinary folks who sometimes die along with them tend to be forgotten.

Was at a pilot site last night. Charted helo, he didn’t own onw anymore. Pilots in general agreement that this was a CFIT, “controlled flight into ground”. Flight path shows plane circled for about 11 minutes waiting for space to fly in. May have lost directional awareness.

Pilot flew north and made left turn into higher terrain. Fog level was below hilltops. Flying way too fast, 150 mph, for visual conditions. Not on instruments, which is a bit of a mystery.

Ground photo indicates CFIT too. Pilots all very sad. Kobe was long-time helo user, probably because safer and faster than dealing with the traffic. They shouldn’t have flown this day obviously.
