A recent outbreak in China of a new strand of coronavirus may be linked to an objectively disgusting Chinese delicacy called bat soup, according to reports. Video footage online shows an entire cooked, dead bat sitting in soup. Scientists believe that the virus, which has killed 17 and infected over 640 people, could have spread from snakes or bats. Is this bat soup the cause of the quickly-spreading virus?

Tips for Eating Chicken Feet:

You will want to use chopsticks or your hands to eat chicken feet as they give you a good grip.
The rule of thumb is: Anything, except the bones and nails, is edible.
So now, get ready to dig in:
Get a good grip of the foot.
Start by biting off the toes between the joints, one toe at a time. For chicken feet newbies, maybe one joint at a time to start with.
While having the joint(s) in your mouth, chew off the skin and suck at the bone (don’t forget to enjoy the yummy sauce in the meantime).
Then spit the bone(s) out.
Repeat the above on the remaining toes/joints.
Now you can move on to that little pad on the foot, the ‘fleshiest’ part. Just like how you work the joints, chew off the skin and suck all the cartilage off the bone. Experienced chicken feet eaters may pop the whole thing in their mouth, but it’s okay to just gnaw on it until all the skin and cartilage are devoured.
If your chicken feet come with a bit of leg, just bite and chew on it until only a bone is left.
Voilà, now you can call yourself a chicken feet expert!

Well, if it’s soup and boiled for awhile, it should be ok...

That's true but quite a few people have to handle the bats before they're cooked.

What’s in those cans in the background? Carbonated dog piss?

In Japan there is a carbonated beverage called ‘Calpis’, but pronounced ‘Cowpiss’. It’s pretty good actually.

Gives a new & deeper meaning to “BAT SHIT CRAZY”!

Yeah, let’s boil a flying RODENT that almost NEVER spends time in the sun - where it MIGHT get minimal DISINFECTION of whatever the hell microbes it carries - and lives in dark, dank caves.

What could go wrong?

[Just looking at that makes me sick.

Who the hell thought that was safe to eat?]

I’m sure it’s safe to eat. Cooking anything above 165F kills all bugs in literally seconds. You can literally see the steam coming off that that bowl of soup, so it’s likely 212F. The problem is the people who processed it before cooking probably got sick. And anyone who bought raw meat there for cooking at home was exposed to the live virus, as opposed to whatever dead remnants were in that steaming bowl of soup.

https://www.fda.gov/food/people-risk-foodborne-illness/meat-poultry-seafood-food-safety-moms-be

Between OSHA and the FDA, regulations for meat-packing plants exist to prevent workers from getting sick or hurt, and meat from getting contaminated. My suspicion is that the Chinese regulations for meat handling are non-existent. After this messy and expensive disease outbreak, you can expect that to change, on pain of yuge fines and maybe jail terms.
