So what confuses me is that they claim 41 dead and something like 38 recovered, what about the thousands of others? Many have been sick since December. Either there are a lot more dead, or recovered, or both. We will never know with China, probably.
If I were US government, I would at least shut down flights from China. It wont stop it but may slow it down.
With 56 million on lockdown in China (that’s about five New York Cities) and Hong Kong shutting down school for two weeks (for now) - I’m guessing that number of 41 is off by a factor of 10 or 100.

for example..last night when the first Australian infected was announced she said that since he should no symptoms on the flight he wasn’t contagious....but other reports out of China are saying the opposite....then later the lady backtracked and said we don’t know how contagious he may have been....

1. I have no idea what the typical interval is between onset of symptoms and death, for those that die.
The apparent discrepancy you mention in the numbers may be due to many of the infected currently being neither dead nor recovered.
