I thought it was the females that they didn’t want. Not sure where I got that idea.
It is strange that males seem to have been effected most at the start..but perhaps there is a cultural aspect. Men out more while women stay home. Although, I see plenty of women on the street.

In their one child plan, it is traditional to want boys. So they would abort, or in the country, murder girl babies. The there are a lot of 20 something men, without any women.
That is not something you ever want—a bunch of pissed off young men. Unless you can toss them at a war.
It probably has to do with location on the outbreak and the professions of those infected.
Men fight wars, mostly. We are just smelly barbarians under our clothes. Lol.
